Safety Articles

The purpose of the Winter Park Safety and Crisis Management Team is to develop and implement crisis response guidelines under the advice of the College Compliance Inspector and the Security Manager. These guidelines describe how the team and campus personnel can respond to a crisis situation in order to preserve lives, minimize injuries, reduce losses, and return the campus to normal operations in a minimum amount of time. The team assists the Provost or designees in implementing these guidelines through training and practice drills.

Articles and Synergy Documents - Safety on MySpace.com (B)

For many Americans, summer means fun in the sun. The kids are out of school, adults are on vacation and it's time for outdoor activities like riding bikes and hosting barbecues. However, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) warns that summer also is the time of year consumers are most likely to be injured. More than 3.7 million consumers went to hospital emergency rooms with product-related injuries in June, July and August 2001. During that summer, about 836,000 more consumers suffered product-related injuries than in January, February and March 2001. To avoid becoming a 2002 statistic, CPSC advises everyone to enjoy summer activities with safety in mind.

Articles and Synergy Documents - Carbon Monoxide Precautions

Carbon monoxide is a significantly toxic gas and is the most common type of fatal poisoning in many countries. Exposures can lead to significant toxicity of the central nervous system and heart. Following poisoning, long-term sequelae often occur. Carbon monoxide can also have severe effects on the fetus of a pregnant woman. OSHA limits workplace exposure levels to 35 ppm. Symptoms of mild poisoning include headaches and dizziness at concentrations less than 100 ppm. Concentrations as low as 667 ppm can cause up to 50% of the body's hemoglobin to be converted to carboxy-hemoglobin (HbCO) and ineffective for delivering oxygen. Exposures of this level can be life-threatening.

Articles and Synergy Documents - Dog Safety

The majority of dogs are friendly pets who enjoy meeting new people, but even a friendly dog can bite in certain situations. Often when someone is bitten, it is by a dog that is well known to them-the family dog or a neighbours dog, for example. Often the bite is accidental and happens during excited play. However, sometimes a dog will bite on purpose-out of fear or aggression.

Safety Articles - 100 Safe Days of Summer: Sun Sense

Sun Sense: Overexposure to the sun is the principle cause of most skin cancers. There are more than a million new skin cancers being diagnosed each year in the United States. The risk increases for those who are heavily exposed to the sun in their occupations. Outdoor recreational activities, such as swimming, skiing, golfing and jogging have an increased risk as well.

Safety Articles - 100 Safe Days of Summer: Repetitive Strain Injuries

Repetitive Strain Injuries: Ergonomics is the science of fitting the job to the worker in order to reduce injuries. Tasks that require repetitive motions, awkward positions, heavy lifting or tremendous strain can lead to repetitive strain injuries or cumulative trauma disorders (CTD). These injuries affect muscles, tendons, and nerves and usually take a long time to develop. Examples of CTD include tendonitis, trigger finger and carpal tunnel syndrome. Eyestrain is a common injury associated with repetitive strain.

Safety Articles - First Aid Facts

First aid is the initial medical treatment an injured person receives. In an emergency, this treatment can be critical to saving a person’s life. Be sure to know what to do in a specific situation. Most non-emergency situations require only a basic knowledge of first aid and a little common sense. For serious emergencies such as an unconscious victim, call 911 immediately.
