Literature Resource Center Tips

The Literature Resource Center is a database that provides users with access to biographical and critical information for 120,000 authors. Articles retrieved may be printed or emailed.

The default search is Author Search. This database can also be searched by Title, Advanced Search, Keyword, Author by Type, and Literary-Historical Timeline.

Author-Searches by full name, partial name, or pseudonym.

Title-Searches by any words entered, all words entered, or exact title (you have to select one choice).

Advanced-You can choose AND, OR, NOT from the drop-down menus.

AND
Searches for both search terms
For example, the search Charlotte Brönte AND Jane Eyre retrieves articles that contain both terms Charlotte Brönte and Jane Eyre.

OR
Searches for either search term
For example, the search Mary Shelley OR Frankenstein retrieves articles that contain either term Mary Shelley or Frankenstein.

NOT
Searches for articles that contain only one of the search terms
For example, the search Mark Twain NOT Huckleberry Finn searches only for Mark Twain; any articles that contain the term Huckleberry Finn will not be included.

Keyword-A broad search allowing you to search the text of documents for specific words.

Authors by Type-Allows you to narrow your search by ethnicity, author nationality, genre, theme, or literary movement or time period.

Literary-Historical Timeline-
Provides a searchable timeline of the literary events from 100,000 B.C. through the present. This is a great way to see what literary events may have influenced the author you are researching!
