English and Reading Software Resources

All of the computers in the CSSC are equipped with the Microsoft Office suite, internet access, and a variety of prep and college-level reading and English software programs:

Ten Steps to Improving College Reading Skills, used by reading professors, is a program that includes exercises dealing with vocabulary in context, main ideas, supporting ideas/central point, relationships, fact and opinion, inferences, purpose and tone, argument, and combined skills. Students can print their scores.

Perfect Copy is a program for students in Prep English I lab sections. It contains passages that reflect multiple errors in punctuation, capitals, numbers, easily confused words, abbreviations, subject-verb agreement, pronouns, irregular verbs, and all skills. Students must locate and correct all errors in order to obtain “Perfect Copy,” Instructors can alter the parameters of the program to suit individual requirements; instructors can also set up accounts for their classes and monitor progress.

Skills Bank 4, used by English professors, is a program that enhances student learning as it offers exercises in languages (capitalization, grammar and usage, punctuation, spelling), writing (language mechanics, language usage, sentence structure, clear writing & paragraphs), and (vocabulary building, word knowledge, reading comprehensions).

Ultimate Speed Reader is a program that begins with an assessment test that calculates the student’s reading speed and comprehension. It is a “training program,” consisting of warm-up and eye movement exercises, newspaper reading, paced and timed reading, and the “Eye Max” game, is then used to increase reading speed. This program is used by Reading and English professors.

Reading Road Trip is a program that offers tutorials, readings, interactive exercises and mastery tests in a wide variety of reading and study skills. Within each skill-based module, the user visits a different point of interest in the United States. Reading professors use this program.

Merit Languages Arts Bundle for College Prep is a program that features writing, grammar, reading and vocabulary curriculum for skill levels 9 and above. The complete series contains a wide variety of teaching activities and age-appropriate texts and formats. Multiple student tracking, record keeping and book marking are included. This program is used by English and reading professors alike.
