Course Information and Fees

Emergency Medical Technicians administer emergency medical treatment and transport the sick and/or injured persons to the closest appropriate hospital, working as a member of the emergency medical team.  Emergency Medical Technicians respond to emergency events or alarms and follow the instructions provided from emergency medical dispatchers. EMTs drive and are responsible for a specially equipped emergency vehicle to both the scene of an accident or catastrophe and to the hospital.  The EMT continuously monitors communication equipment to remain in contact with the dispatcher and receiving facilities.  EMTs assess and evaluate the nature and extent of an illness or injury and provide basic life saving techniques and/or procedures.

These procedures include, but are not limited to, medical care such as opening and maintaining an airway, restoring breathing, controlling bleeding, treating for shock, managing medical pathologies (i.e., cardiac arrest, diabetes, neurological crisis), placing splints on fractures or dislocations, bandaging, assisting with childbirth, managing mentally disturbed patients, and providing the initial care to poison and burn victims.

Other common interventions include; the removal of trapped victims from motor vehicle collisions, providing spinal immobilization, administering oxygen and monitors its delivery with the use of pulse oximetry, provides artificial resuscitation when necessary, reports by radio communication directly to the receiving hospital emergency departments or physician medical directors about the nature and extent of injuries or illnesses and the number of patients involved and/or transported.  Additionally, the EMT receives medical advice or orders from the emergency department physician if needed.

Finally, Emergency Medical Technicians report their patient’s historical and physical examination findings and treatment interventions to both the emergency department staff and physicians for diagnostic purposes and as a matter of record.
