Q: Do I need to be a student at Valencia to apply to the Dental Hygiene Program?
A: Yes. You must apply to the college before you submit a Dental Hygiene application.
You can apply online with the Admissions office or email Enrollment services at
enrollment@valenciacc.edu to begin the application process with Valencia.
Q: Do I need to be a Florida resident to apply to the Dental Hygiene Program?
A: Yes. You must be a Florida resident by the application deadline of February 1st.
Q: What courses do I need to take prior to applying to the Dental Hygiene program?
A: The prerequisite courses which must be completed prior to applying to the program (minimum grades of C) are:
- BSC 2093C - Human Anatomy and Physiology I
- BSC 2094C - Human Anatomy and Physiology II
- MCB 2010C - Microbiology
- ENC 1101 - Freshman Composition I
However, due to the high number of applicants and the selection point process,
it is recommended to have the following courses completed (minimum grades of C) before you apply
to Dental Hygiene:
- HUN 2202 - Essentials of Nutrition with Diet Therapy
- SPC 1600 - Fundamentals of Speech
- PSY 1012 - General Psychology
- SYG 2000 - Introduction to Sociology
- Elective - Any Humanities or Fine Arts
- HSC 1531 - Medical Terminology OR HSC 1004 Professions of Caring
Q: Are the prerequisite courses offered online?
A: Yes. The general education courses are offered on campus and online.
However, science courses must be completed on campus.
Q: Do I have to take all the prerequisite courses at a particular campus?
A: No, you may take the prerequisite courses at any Valencia campus location.
However, if accepted, Dental Hygiene courses are only offered on the West Campus.
Q: Will my courses from other colleges transfer to Valencia?
A: Once you have applied to Valencia, you will need to request that your official transcripts be sent from your previous institution. The Admissions Office will evaluate all transcripts
once they are received to determine transfer credit.
A: Yes. You must complete the TEAS and make the required scores before you apply:
a minimum 75% Overall and a minimum75 % Reading). NET [Nurse Entrance Test] scores may be used if the test
was administered at Valencia and passed—minimum 65% Reading and minimum 65% Composite—within five years
prior to submission of the Dental Hygiene program application.
Q: What is the deadline to apply to the Dental Hygiene Program?
A:The deadline to apply is February 1st of each year.
Q: About how many students apply to the Dental Hygiene program?
A: Approximately 70 students apply to the program each year.
Q: How many students are accepted into the Dental Hygiene program and how often?
A: The Dental Hygiene program accepts 25 students per year. The program begins
once each year in May (Full Summer Term).
Q: What are my chances of being accepted?
A: Each year there are approximately 70 applicants and the Dental Hygiene Program accepts 25 students.
The admission committee uses a points system as a guide to select which students will be offered acceptance, which will be placed on the alternate list and which will be denied admission. the alternate list.
By using this guide, you can calculate the number of points you will be awarded. Each year the applicant pool changes
in composition so there is no set number of points that will guarantee admission for any one year. Based on information from 2008, those students who had 27 or more points were offered a seat.
Usually, f ive applicants are placed on the alternate list.
Q: What is the schedule like if I am accepted into the Dental Hygiene program?
A: The schedule is M-F during the day. We do not offer a part-time or evening program.
Clinical hours vary each semester from 12-24 hours per week in addition to the required
credit hours of class/lab time.
