Can anyone use the lab?
All currently enrolled Valencia students may use the lab. You
will need to bring your Valencia ID to sign-in. If you are not
enrolled in classes for the current semester, there are computers
available on the second floor. You will need to login to these
computers with your Atlas ID and PIN.
If I know my Valencia ID number, why do I need
to have the actual ID?
We require your Valencia ID in order to verify that you are,
indeed, the student who is logging in.
Why can't I just use my driver's license? It
has my photo and my name.
Library policy governs the type of ID we may accept. We may
only accept a Valencia ID.
How will my professor know that I have used the
lab ?
By signing in and out of the lab, we are able to record how
often you visited the lab, and how much time you spent in the
lab. Since some professors offer extra credit, or require lab
time as part of the course, we send monthly reports showing student
usage. Your professor will receive a report stating what days
you visited and how long you used the lab.
Can I access the Internet?
All of our computers have internet access. Our default browser
is Internet Explorer for Windows and Safari for Macintosh. We
have Mozilla Firefox on all computers.
Do you have wireless connectivity for my laptop?
Valencia does have a wireless network that you can
connect to using your Atlas login information. For the best signal
strength, you should look for the "Wi-Fi" signs posted near areas
of strong signal strength.
Can I use the lab to do personal work?
Though the primary purpose of the lab is course-related work/study,
our computers may be used for personal work or to surf the 'net.
Can I access WebCT?
Since WebCT is internet-based, it is accessible from all computers
in the lab. As certain features of WebCT differ between
platforms (Macintosh and Windows), be certain to ask for assistance
if you encounter any problems while using WebCT.
Can I download and listen to music?
Most music is copyrighted and downloading it would be a violation
of US copyright law. In order to protect students, we do not permit
music downloading. You are free to listen to any music you bring
with you.
Do you have headphones?
We do have headphones that you may check-out to use while in
the lab. We have other items, as well, such as microphones
and graphics tablets that you may also check out. Just ask if
you're looking for something specific!
Can I print in color?
We have a laser color printer available for student use. While
the cost of black and white pages is only 10 cents, color pages
cost 50 cents. You do not need a different copy
card to print in color.
Where can I get a copy card?
Copy card machines are located on the first and second floors
of the library. You will need a $1 bill in order to purchase the
card, but the card will retain that $1 value until you use it
completely. There is no need to purchase multiple cards; you can
add value to any card by simply inserting the card first and then
inserting money. The copy card machine does NOT accept change.
Can I burn to CD/DVD?
All of our computers are capable of burning CDs. Our Macintosh
computers are capable of burning DVDs. You will need to bring
either a CD-R (one-time use), CD-RW (multiple uses), DVD-R (one-time
use), or DVD-RW (multiple uses) with you, as we do not have these
items available for purchase.
Can I save my work to the computer and come back
later to finish it?
You may save your work, but we do not recommend that you save
your work to the computer. In the event that the computer needs
to be restarted, your work will be lost. You can save
documents to the Student Documents folder on our server. However,
anyone can open, make changes to, or delete your document.
In addition, any document not opened within seven days is automatically
deleted.
Where can I save my work?
As our lab no longer has floppy drives, we recommend that you
purchase a USB drive (also known as a thumb, flash or keychain
drive) to save your work. These drives hold an extraordinary number
of files and can be purchased for as little as $10. If you are
unable to purchase a USB drive, you may save your work to CD or
DVD. However, a CD burned on one computer may not work in another
computer. Students have had this problem in the past, and so we
recommend that you purchase a USB drive.
What if I only have a floppy disk?
Right now, there are computers available on the second floor
that offer floppy drives, though we really suggest you invest
in a USB drive.
