College Update, March 29, 2005

Big Move:

With very mixed feelings, I must announce that Dr. Tracy Edwards has been successfully courted to serve as president of Lethbridge Community College in southern Alberta, Canada. She will be leaving in mid May to begin her transition.

We all knew when Tracy joined us that she would be sought after for roles like this. And I have supported her through the process, secretly repressing my hopes that she would defer her next career move for a couple more years. This particular role not only takes her back to Canada, however, but also back to her family and to a college that looks like a wonderful fit for her considerable leadership gifts.

We, of course, will miss her terribly. Tracy's influence, both as a professional and a friend here, are remarkable. But the legacy of her work will continue to serve Valencia well.

I will be meeting with staff and faculty leaders over the next week or two to reflect on options for interim leadership, any organizational adjustments that might be appropriate, and thoughts about longer term leadership. Your counsel is welcome.

Meanwhile, be sure to look for an opportunity to wish Tracy adieu.
