Subject: Summer Work Schedule
We recently made a modest change for a more rational office hour schedule for faculty in the summer. I have wondered also about the four and a half day work schedule for other staff. I certainly can see that Friday afternoon in the summer is a low demand period for our services. I have some difficulty understanding the value of the four nine-hour days on Monday to Thursday.
Therefore, after discussions with Staff Council Chairs, the Provosts, and the Faculty Association President, I have decided to institute a 36 hour work week for the eleven-week summer schedule. Most non-faculty employees will work their regular schedule on Monday-Thursday and then a half-day on Friday.
I believe that this schedule will not reduce our responsiveness to students in any way. Rather, by reducing stress on staff and encouraging their renewal in the summer, I expect our productivity and morale will both increase. Further, this is more family friendly, as any parent who has rushed to pick up their children before the child care center closes can explain.
Details will be forthcoming in the next day or two from Human Resources. The new schedule begins Monday. TOP |
