Resources for Service Providers
Introduction
Valencia Community
College has a long history of providing a solid structure of services
to maximize educational opportunities for Deaf and hard of hearing
students. We serve Deaf and hard of hearing students on all our
campuses: East, West, Winter Park and Osceola, as well as at our
newly constructed Criminal Justice Institute located near East campus.
Julie Balassa is the Assistant Director, Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services
(DHHS) and Assistive Technology. It is her responsibility to hire and supervise all service
providers who provide interpreting and/or speech-to-text services
to our Deaf and hard of hearing students.

Professional Ethics and Development
Littering the long
path to professionalism lie the past relics of old ideas about the
interpreting process and the role of interpreters.
Today, we must clear the mind of outdated past practices. The
profession of interpreting has been established and enlightened
thanks to the tireless efforts of Deaf consumers, interpreters,
and the professional organizations that serve them both.
Professional ethics involve behaving in a way that empowers others.
The professional interpreter model is no longer one of helper, conduit
(telephone), or communication facilitator. The current working philosopy
of interpreting is a bilingual-bicultural (bi-bi) model in which
the interpreter is an integral member of a team of service providers
and brings to this team an awareness of the inherent differences
in the languages, cultures and norms for social interaction of the
clients using interpreting services. Our ethical decision making
empowers us and our consumers when it is based on this bi-bi philosophy.
Our Code of Professional Conduct is a guide to putting into practice
the spririt of professionalism, not a rigid "letter of the
law" set of rules that fails to take into account the bi-bi philosophy and collaborative teamwork.
DHHS is encourages each service provider to contiually broaden horizons and
maintain and enhance interpreting, speech-to-text,
and global skills. We have a library of resource materials including
books and videotapes. Please contact us if you would like to access our
library.
Please remember that we must have your most
current credentials (NAD-RID certification, Florida Quality Assurance,
etc.) on file each term.
Please let us know if you have achieved a certification or educational
milestone.
Agencies
If
you are an agency who would like to provide services to our Deaf
and hard of hearing students, you must be entered into the Valencia
system as a vendor. To become a vendor, you must
complete a Supplier Business Profile and Substitute Form
W-9. If you have not yet discussed becoming a vendor for
DHHS, please contact Julie Balassa to make an appointment. In the
meantime, you may download and complete the Supplier Business Profile
and Substitute Form W-9 by clicking on the links below.
