Vista Information

OIT will deploy Vista to staff and faculty as part of a new install (Ghost Image) and begin deployment on or about 1 January 2009. OIT staff will be busy working compatibility issues with other applications which include GroupWise Client.

Why can't I install Vista on my PC?
There are a lot of little reasons for not installing Vista, but the three listed below are the most important.

1. There is no Novell networking client that works with Vista. Without the Novell client you will have no connectivity to any of the network drives on the Novell network, which is all of them. There will be no connectivity to network applications that run on a Novell server.
2. Vista comes with IE7 and currently, there is no way to install IE6. This means that:
   
   1. There are usability issues with WebCT with Vista.
   2. Banner flat out doesn't work which means student related information will be unavailable.
   3. Oracle flat out doesn't work which means there will be problems with purchasing, finance, and HR.
3. Vista and Java do not like each other. Yes, there are some applets that work but the majority do not. (refer to #2 for details)

These 3 items in themselves are showstoppers for deployment of the new applications. We are actively looking for solutions to these problems so please bare with us.
