| ESSAY CONTEST: The Kite Runner |
WHO: Open to currently enrolled Valencia Community College Students who have read The Kite Runner.
WHAT: 1000 word essay on ONE of these 2 topics:
Write about a mistake that you made when you were younger and the effect that mistake has had on your life.
OR
Write about how you have attempted to right a wrong you did to another person.
$100.00 Prize to the Winner!!
The Winning Essay will be considered for publication inThe Phoenix.
DETAILS: Submissions are due by November 15, 2007 at 5:00 pm.
- One submission per student. This must be an original work by you.
- Submissions may be no longer than 1000 words.
- Please include a cover sheet. Put your name on the cover sheet ONLY.
- Do NOT identify yourself by name in the text of the essay.
- Staple all pages together.
- Judges' decision will be final. A tie vote between the judges will be decided by a drawing.

Join us to officially kick off Get Into Reading with the opening of a Photo Gallery by Jeremy Veverka featuring Afghanistan. Share a bite to eat and see the real Afghanistan of Khaled Hosseini's novel, in pictures. The display will be available in the library through November 20.

About Get Into Reading |
| Get Into Reading is Valencia's 1st-ever Community Read. Modeled on a national initiative called The Big Read, its goal is to get Valencia "Into" Reading while promoting community through themed events and more! Get Into Reading is the result of a partnership between West and Winter Park Campus Student Development, West and Winter Park campus libraries, the Communication department and faculty collaboration across disciplines. It seeks to engage our campus community in dialogue and bring us together by promoting tolerance and understanding about differing points of views and cultures. Get Into Reading will also introduce and promote the library to new users. The program ties in with Valencia's Education Is In and Student Development's Get In campaigns, as well as the Communications division's Raising Readers project. Students will be reading Khaled Hosseini's The Kite Runner in their classes and participating in tie-in events, brown-bag lunch discussion groups and other activities relating to the novel. Hosseini's bestselling debut novel, chosen by Valencia students, is a novel with applications across many disciplines!
