Angela King - Reformed Skinhead

“Inside/Out: Life Inside and Out of the Racist Underground”

February 20, 2008

Osceola Auditorium – 3:00- 5:00

What drives a person to hate?  How does hate transition from an emotion into an act of violence?  What does it take to break free?  What can be done to prevent hate and violence within our schools and our greater community?

UCF graduate student Angela King will speak about her experiences as a skinhead, her time in prison, and her road out of the racist movement.  Angela uses her personal experiences to teach tolerance, monitor racist organizations, and develop action plans that assist in combating bigotry in schools and communities.

February 26, 2008

East Campus-PAC

1:00 – 2:00 pm

Dr. Balick will discuss the methodology of tropical plant exploration, as well as introduce some of the traditional healers that he and his colleagues have worked with in Central America and Micronesia.  Traditional knowledge can be of great value in addressing contemporary issues in public health and conservation. For example, much potential exists for increased use of herbal remedies for health care, both in the region and internationally.  However, in seeking to fulfill this potential, scientists find themselves in a race against time, with both tropical forests being destroyed and indigenous knowledge about the uses of the plants and their environment rapidly being lost. Come, learn, and enjoy…….

A brief (8 minute) video, with excerpts from interviews with two Belizean traditional healers, will follow the lecture.

Frequently asked questions:

Question:  What is grade forgiveness/repeated courses?

Response:  You may not repeat a course for credit if you have earned an A, B, or C in the course or if you have had three attempts in the same course at Valencia.  The only exceptions are those courses described in the catalog course description as a “multiple credit course.” For example: band, choir, selected topics, internships, etc. These courses may be repeated for credit; repeats of these courses will not count as attempts for the full cost of instruction fee or for withdrawal purposes.

Grade forgiveness is applied automatically to your courses when the conditions for grade forgiveness are satisfied.  Forgiven grades, and the courses in which you earned them, will always appear on your transcript.

Question:  How does grade forgiveness apply to Honors credit?

Response:  You may use an Honors section and a non-honors section of the same course inter-changeably for grade forgiveness. If the initial attempt was an Honors section and the repeated course section was not, grade forgiveness will be applied but no Honors credit will be awarded.  However, if the initial attempt was not an Honors section, but the repeated course is an Honors section, grade forgiveness will be given and Honors credit awarded.
