Honors Spring Break 2008 in Peru
Words are hard to find to express my pride in the group of 29 students that I served while in Peru this past Spring Break. Special thanks also to our wonderful faculty members, Professor George Brooks and Professor Frame for their amazing support in our travels. Thank you all for an experience of a lifetime!

Let’s Plan Spring Break 2009 Together!
Please join Tracy and other Honors students in the East Campus HRC on Wednesday, May 7th at 2:30 to participate in a discussion about next year’s Honors destination. If you would like to be a part of the planning process, please attend!
New Honors Scholarships and Procedures
Good News! The Honors Scholarships have gone through some changes to make them more accessible to more students, while supporting the growth and development of our Honors Program. There are two different scholarships available to our students and the names are very similar to the prior scholarships: The President’s Academic Honors Scholarship and the Honors Exemplary Scholarship, both require a 3.5 GPA minimum. If you are interested in learning more about the criteria and the requirements for each scholarship, go to our website at http://www.valenciacc.edu/honors/finaid.cfm. Please note that if you are currently on scholarship with our program, you will be required to re-apply to be considered for next year’s funds. If you have any questions regarding our new scholarships, procedures, or policies, you can call B at 407-582-1729 for more information. Applications for the Honors Exemplary Scholarship will be accepted beginning May 5 through July 14, 2008. Applications can be printed from the above website.
Valencia’s Brain Bowl Team Wins National Academic Quiz Tournament Intercollegiate Tournament

The Valencia Brain Bowl team won the National Academic Quiz Tournaments Intercollegiate Tournament (NAQT ICT)title for community colleges on Saturday at Washington University in St. Louis. This marks Valencia's fifth CC national championship in the seven years this tournament has existed. Valencia also won in 2002, 2003, 2004, and 2007.
The team comprised Tristan Byers, Lyndsay Harvey, Greg Kazaros, Ian Mackenzie (who was the fourth-leading scorer among CC players), Chris Muto, and Lane Silberstein.
Muchcredit for the team's successis also due Chris Borglum, Boris Nguyen, and to Lois McNamara, the latter of whom still puts in hours and hours helping the team despite having officially retired.
The four starters for this year's champions will all be moving on next year, so, if you think you may be interested in being part of the Brain Bowl team (they practice on Mondays and Wednesdays and receive a stipend for their time) contact Chris Borglum at cborglum@valenciacc.edu.

Frequently asked questions:
Question: How many times may I attempt a course?
Response: If you are enrolled in a course for credit beyond the Drop/Refund Deadline, the course counts as an attempt. The Drop/Refund Deadline for each term is listed in the Academic Calendar in the online official catalog and the Mock Registration Credit Class Schedule which can be obtained from the Advising Center, Answer Center, Book Store, and Information Station on each campus.
You may attempt the same course only three times at Valencia including the original grade, repeat grades and withdrawals. The same course normally means the subject’s prefix and course number is the same when posted on a Valencia transcript.
What do you know about Interdisciplinary Honors (IDH)?
How’s Shakespeare related to Machiavelli? Voltaire to Karl Marx? Steven Spielberg to Jean-Paul Sarte? You’ll find out in IDH. IDH is a program within Honors that immerses the student in the study of science, philosophy, psychology, art history, religion, and literature from a perspective that stresses the interrelatedness of these disciplines.
The Honors IDH program contains four courses, all of which meet Valencia graduation requirements and count for 6 credits each (two courses in one). Students who choose to take all 4 IDH courses will have enough credits to count toward the Honors Degree, will have a global perspective of today’s most current topics, and will be a part of a dynamic learning community that will impact their lives forever. If you have any questions about IDH, call our office at 407-582-1729. Register for IDH for fall!
Look for some new Honors Courses coming in the Fall and MANY more next Spring
- Oceanography with Professor Rogers on East
- Multimedia Literature and the Holocaust with Professor Paul Licata, online
- HUM2310 Mythology will be taught online in Second Life by Professor Frame
