Where do I pick up or turn in paperwork?

The Answer Center should be your first stop in seeking answers to many of your questions. At the Answer Center you will find cross-trained Student Services Specialist knowledgeable of admissions, financial aid, advising and many other areas. They are available to work with you on a walk-in basis. The purpose of the Answer Center is to assist students in completing the majority of the application and enrollment process in one location.

Specialists in the Answer Center have the ability to:

clarify initial educational goals,
review the admissions application,
answer financial aid questions and refer students to financial aid specialists as necessary,
describe the assessment process and direct students to assessment preparation materials.

How do I apply if I used to be a Valencia student?

Former Valencia students need to submit an updated completed Florida Residency form at one of the Answer Centers.

Are there entry requirements or entry tests?

Yes, before you have attended the New Student Orientation visit Assessment to take the Computerized Placement Test (CPT). CPT review materials are available for purchase in the bookstore.

Degree seeking students must complete the Computerized Placement Test. Proof of completed college courses in math and English may be substituted for portions of the assessment. Also, if you have taken the SAT or ACT within the last two years and obtained satisfactory scores as listed in the college's online catalog, you may waive assessment in those skill areas.

Is there a New Student Orientation?

Yes, after you have completed the Computerized Placement Score, sign up for a mandatory New Student Orientation. To sign up for New Student Orientation log into your Atlas account and click on the New Student Orientation link.

Attend New Student Orientation. At orientation you will review the degree programs offered at Valencia, degree requirements, policy and procedures of the college and how your placement test impacts your first term course selection. If your official transcripts have not been received by Valencia, to ensure proper advisement, you must have an unofficial copy of your transcripts. During orientation you will meet with an Educational Advisor to develop an education plan and select classes.

How do I transfer in credits from another accredited college or university?

Request official copies of transcripts from all colleges that you ever attended. It is suggested that you also have your final high school transcripts or proof of your GED sent to Valencia.

What is the difference between degree-seeking and personal interest?

Degree-seeking students are those seeking an Associate in Arts (A.A.) or an Associate in Science (A.S.) or Associate in Applied Science (A.A.S.) degree.

Personal interest students are non-degree seeking students (personal interest, transient, teacher recertification, or job improvement) and are not required to submit official academic transcripts unless needed for verification of course prerequisites. Official academic transcripts are not evaluated for non-degree seeking students.

Questions about Voluntary Pre-K (VPK)

What is VPK (Voluntary Pre-K)?

A constitutional amendment passed by Florida's voters in Nov. 2002 required a voluntary prekindergarten program for all four-year-old children by fall 2005. The program is designed to prepare four-year-olds for kindergarten and build the foundation for their educational success. The program allows a parent to enroll his or her eligible child (four years old by September 1 and residing in Florida) in a free VPK program. The program is voluntary for children and providers.

What does Valencia do to assist individuals to earn the VPK teaching credentials? Valencia offers two (2) courses in Early Childhood Education. They are Introduction to Early Childhood Education (EEC 2001) and Early Childhood Assessment (EDG 2935). Florida Statute 1002.55 outlines the requirements for Pre-K and VPK teachers.

What is an A.A. Pre-Major?

Valencia's Pre-Majors are designed for a student who plans to earn the Associate in Arts Degree and transfer to one of the eleven state universities in Florida as a junior to complete a bachelor's degree in one of the specific majors. Each Pre-Major includes the courses to satisfy Valencia's General Education requirements for the A.A. Degree and the Statewide Common Course Prerequisites for the specific major (which count as the elective credits for the A.A. Degree).

What is the difference between an A.A. degree and an A.S./A.A.S. degree?

The Associate in Arts (A.A.) degree parallels the first two years of a four-year bachelor's degree. In Florida, graduates with an A.A. degree are also guaranteed acceptance as juniors into the state university system. The Associate in Science (A.S.) and Associate in Applied Science (A.A.S.) degree programs lead to immediate entry into the workforce.

How do I prove I am a Florida resident for reduced tuition?

The Florida Residency for Tuition Purposes form must be completed with the appropriate documentation. You may use one primary document (a Florida Driver's License or Florida Identification Card for example) and provide three additional supporting documents to prove Florida Residency (for example: copy of lease agreement and proof of payments for 12 consecutive months; mortgage documents showing the home was purchased at least 12 consecutive months ago; copy of one utility bill (such as electricity or cable television) and proof of 12 consecutive months of payments; a letter from your employer stating your date of hire and that you have been a full-time employee for at least 12 consecutive months; etc.). Are there special classes in the General Education program that will help achieve my degree? If there are at least 20 students interested, the college will offer Selected Topics courses in a variety of areas. Some titles that might be of interest are Sociology of Poverty and Early Learning Classroom Assessment. These courses would be designed to address many of the concerns teachers will face in working with School Readiness and Head Start children. Contact a campus Social Sciences dean about starting a cohort for Selected Topics course.  
Is there a course that will help me be successful in college and at Valencia? Yes, Valencia offers a course called Student Success which is designed to introduce you to college resources, help you map out your education plan, select a major when you’re ready, set some goals for yourself and dust off those study skills so necessary for your success. You’ll be able to connect with your peers and make some friends. With at cohort of students, Valencia can offer a section with the majority of the students being early childhood education majors.

What is the statute related to the goal Associate and Bachelor degrees in Early Childhood settings?

By the 2010-2011 school year, each pre-k class will have at least one pre-k instructor who holds an associate's or higher degree in the field of early childhood education or child development; and by the 2013-2014 school year, a bachelor's or higher degree in the field of early childhood education or child development will be required.

Can I use this degree to get a CDA?

Students seeking alternative CDA certification may use the completed degree combined with field experience to earn CDA certification. For this certification, at least six credits must include EEC 2001 Introduction to Early Childhood Education or an early literacy course or a child development course. Students are responsible for seeking information on the requirements for alternative CDA certification from the Division of Children and Families and/or the Early Learning Coalition.

What are the Florida CDA requirements?

Visit the DCF website and locate a Florida CDAE program provider in your area, statewide or on-line. Choose a provider and complete their program. Each program listed on the DCF website has met the Department of Children and Families rules and regulations and has been approved as a Florida CDAE provider in the state of Florida; however, training providers operate as independent program.

How do I get a CDA?

Attend one of the approved CDAE programs for a minimum of 120 clock hours and receive a certificate of completion. Please refer to the list of program providers on the DCF website.

Do I need volunteer hours or experience to graduate?  No, the National CDA requires volunteer hours for completion of the certificate.  However, there are a number of Early Childhood Education Providers who are are willing to provide a paid internship while working on your degree.
