Dance Program - Non-Majors
The dance program at Valencia Community College is
open to all students.
The goals of the Valencia Community College Dance Program are to
provide quality technical training, performance opportunities and
enhancement of the overall dance experience through individualized
attention and development. Valencia offers a solid dance education
for the dancer who aspires to make a future in the performing arts,
as well as for the dancer who dances for recreation.
A strong technical emphasis is placed on the traditional dance
disciplines that enhance opportunities for students from any dance
background.

Description of Dance Courses Offered

DAA
1100 - Modern Dance I
Basic theory and practice in using body movements to express or demonstrate
ideas or thoughts. Broadens knowledge of rhythms, music and self-expression
through the medium of movement. May be repeated for a maximum of
4 credit hours, but grade forgiveness cannot be applied. (Special Fee:
$25.00)
DAA 1101 - Modern Dance II
Prerequisite: DAA 1100 or department approval. Further
development of modern dance techniques, rhythms, music and self expression.
May be repeated for a maximum of 4 credit hours, but grade forgiveness
cannot be applied. (Special Fee: $25.00)
DAA 1200 - Ballet I
Basic techniques at the barre using basic foot, arm and body positions.
Center floor work covers basic adagio movements and allegro combinations
and uses classical sequences for traveling across the floor. Leotards,
tights, and ballet shoes needed. May be repeated for a maximum of
4 credit hours, but grade forgiveness cannot be applied. (Special
Fee: $25.00)
DAA 1201 - Ballet II
Prerequisite: DAA 1200 or department approval.
Student experiences an intensification of barre and centre work.
Students are introduced to eight body directions with corresponding
arms and body alignment, pirouettes and the use of beats. May be
repeated for a maximum of 4 credit hours, but grade forgiveness
cannot be applied. (Special Fee: $25.00)
DAA 2500 - Jazz Dance I
Student learns coordinated movements with isolated parts of body
while using jazz style of dance. Basic routines choreographed to
various genres of music. Multiple credit course. May be repeated
for credit for a maximum of 4 credit hours, but grade forgiveness
cannot be applied. (Special Fee: $25.00)
DAA 2501 - Jazz Dance II
Prerequisite: DAA 2500 or department approval.
Continuation of DAA 2500. Multiple credit course. May be repeated
for credit for a maximum of 4 credit hours, but grade forgiveness
cannot be applied. (Special Fee: $25.00)
DAA 1520 - Tap I
This course is an introduction to the fundamentals of tap dance.
Students will study rhythm, direction, and coordination with an
emphasis on the basic elements of tap technique, combination and
routines. Multiple credit course. May be repeated for credit for
a maximum of 4 credit hours, but grade forgiveness cannot be applied.
(Special Fee: $25.00)
DAA 1521 - Tap II
Prerequisite: DAA 1520 or department approval.
Continuation of DAA 1520, intensifying tap combinations and routines.
Multiple credit course. May be repeated for credit for a maximum
of 4 credit hours, but grade forgiveness cannot be applied. (Special
Fee: $25.00)
DAA 1330 - African Dance I
Students are introduced to the cultural traditions of African,
Caribbean and related world dance forms. May be repeated for credit
for a maximum of 4 credit hours, but grade forgiveness cannot be
applied. (Special Fee: $25.00)
DAA 1331 - African Dance II
Prerequisite: DAA 1330 or department approval.
Further development of African Dance I, including a heightened appreciation
of cultural and/or tribal dance variations of Africa and the Caribbean.
May be repeated for credit for a maximum of 4 credit hours, but
grade forgiveness cannot be applied. (Special Fee: $25.00)
DAA 2102 - Intermediate Modern Dance I
Prerequisite: DAA 1101 or department approval. Intensification
of theory and practice in using body movements to express or demonstrate
ideas or thoughts. Increase knowledge of rhythms, music and dynamics.
May be repeated for a maximum of 4 credit hours, but grade forgiveness
cannot be applied. (Special Fee: $25.00)
DAA 2103 - Intermediate Modern Dance II
Prerequisite: DAA 2102 or department approval.
Further development of Intermediate Modern Dance. Analysis of discipline
expanded. May be repeated for a maximum of 4 credit hours, but grade
forgiveness cannot be applied. (Special Fee: $25.00)
DAA 2202 - Intermediate Ballet I
Prerequisite: DAA 1201 or department approval.
This course provides an intermediate / advanced level in the discipline
of ballet. May be repeated for a maximum of 4 credit hours, but
grade forgiveness cannot be applied. (Special Fee: $25.00)
DAA 2203 - Intermediate Ballet II
Prerequisite: DAA 2202 or department approval. This
course provides an intermediate / advanced level in the discipline of
ballet. May be repeated for a maximum of 4 credit hours, but grade forgiveness
cannot be applied. (Special Fee: $25.00)
DAA 1680 - Repertory I
Prerequisite: DAA 1100 or department approval. The
study and practice of selected works of dance repertory. Based on technical
proficiency, a student may be selected for projects such as lecture demonstrations,
workshops, and dance concerts. May include additional performances
away from school which would require time apart from the regular curriculum.
May be repeated for credit, but grade forgiveness cannot be applied.

DAA 1681 - Repertory II
Prerequisite: DAA 1680 or department approval. This
is a continuation of DAA 1680. May be repeated for credit, but grade
forgiveness cannot be applied. (Special Fee: $25.00)
DAA 2610 - Dance Composition and Improvisation I
Prerequisite: DAA 1200 or DAA 1100 or department approval. The analysis
of dance movement through the art of choreography. Students will experience
movement imagery designed to develop the dancer's imagination and will
explore basic spatial, rhythmic and dynamic materials through group improvisations
and individual studies.
DAA 2611 - Dance Composition and Improvisation II
Prerequisite: DAA 2610 or department approval. Further exploration of
choreographic tools and improvisational exercise. Emphasis is placed
on developing personal style.
