Associate in Applied Science and
Associate in Science Degree Programs

You may be interested in earning an Associate in Applied Science
Degree or an Associate in Science Degree at Valencia Community
College. Valencia offers numerous programs for students who
are interested in preparing for a career that requires study
beyond the high school level but does not require a four-year
degree. These programs range from business administration
programs to health-related programs such as dental hygiene and
registered nursing.

When you decide to follow an Associate in Applied Science
(A. A. S.) Degree or an Associate in Science (A. S.) Degree
program, you are not necessarily preparing yourself for transfer
to a state university. You should understand that your decision
will result in your earning a degree which should lead to a
productive career. If later you decide to attend a university, you
may be required to do additional work at the freshman or
sophomore level to meet the general education requirements.
Certain of the A. S. Degrees do articulate with bachelor's degree
programs in the State University System of Florida. These
degrees, called Articulated Associate in Science to B. A./ B. S.
Career Path Degrees, are designed for students who seek
immediate employment in the specified field and who decide to
continue to a Florida public university as a junior to complete a
four-year bachelor's degree in the specified field.

In the A. A. S. Degree or A. S. Degree program you choose, you
will take courses in two basic areas. One area will be specialized
courses. For instance, if you are going to study building
construction technology, you will be taking specialized courses
in architecture and construction.

The second major area of courses you will take will be general
education. General education courses are designed to help you
develop as a well-rounded individual capable of thinking and
acting as a mature, educated and enlightened citizen. It is the
College's belief that courses in general education, such as English
composition and humanities, will enhance your overall
employment potential since they will broaden your knowledge.

The A. A. S. Degree and A. S. Degree programs are described on
the following pages. You can obtain additional information
about the courses by visiting with staff in a campus Advising

and Counseling Center or by contacting the program directors
and department chairs who work with the programs.

Due to the availability of staff, specialized equipment and labs,
and program costs, etc., some A. A. S. Degree and A. S. Degree
programs are restricted to one campus. When this is the case, a
note is made on the program description page. For some
programs, some of the specialized courses may be offered at
more than one campus and the general education courses in the
programs may be taken on any campus.

The Associate in Applied Science Degree and the Associate in
Science Degree require a minimum of 60 college credit hours.
Each Associate in Applied Science and Associate in Science
Degree program consists of a core group of courses known as
the area of specialization. To earn an Associate in Applied
Science or an Associate in Science Degree, you must complete a
minimum of 30 college-level credit hours in your area of
specialization and 15-18 college-level credit hours in general
education. In addition to the information on each A. A. S. and A. S.
Degree program in this catalog, detailed information regarding
each program is provided on program information sheets
available in Advising and Counseling Centers and department
offices.

You will not receive grade forgiveness for any college credit
course (including college-preparatory courses) repeated after you
have been awarded a degree from Valencia if the course initially
was taken prior to the awarding of the degree.

Applied Technology Diploma Program
The Applied Technology Diploma (A. T. D.) program prepares
students for immediate entry into a career in the workforce.
Applied Technology Diploma programs require prescribed
technical courses and a minimum of 11 college credits. College
credit hours earned in an Applied Technology Diploma program
are applicable towards a related Associate in Applied Science
Degree or an Associate in Science Degree; for example, the
courses in the EMT Applied Technology Diploma can be applied
towards the Emergency Medical Services Technology Associate
in Science Degree. The Applied Technology Diploma students
will receive a Diploma upon completion of the diploma program.

Technical Certificate Programs
The Technical Certificate programs prepare students for
immediate entry into a career in the workforce. Technical
Certificate programs require prescribed technical courses, and
may require general education courses, for a minimum of 24
college credits. College credit hours earned in a Technical
Certificate program are applicable towards a related Associate in
Science degree; for example, the courses in the Office Systems
Specialist Technical Certificate can be applied towards the Office
Systems Technology Associate in Science degree. Students will
receive a Certificate upon completion of the certificate program.

Vocational Credit Certificate Programs
The Vocational Credit Certificate programs prepare students for
careers directly in the workforce. The programs require
prescribed vocational credit courses and basic skills proficiency
achieved through college-preparatory courses. Students will
receive a Certificate upon completion of the vocational certificate
program.

Advanced Technical Certificate
Programs

The Advanced Technical Certificate, an extension of a specific
A. S. degree program, consists of at least nine (9) but less than 45
credit hours of college-level course work. Students who have
already received an A. S. degree and are seeking a specialized
program of study to supplement their associate degree may seek
the Advanced Technical Certificate.

Diagnostic Medical Sonography Associate in Science Degree
This program is designed to prepare the student for employment
as a diagnostic medical sonographer. The sonographer should
be skilled by academic and clinical training to perform
ultrasound examinations under the supervision of a qualified
physician.

Diagnostic medical sonography is a dynamic new field in the
medical arena. It is presently being used to evaluate many soft
tissue organs in the body. Some of these organs are the liver,
gallbladder, kidneys, and pancreas. One of the most fascinating
uses of diagnostic ultrasound is the examination and evaluation
of the unborn child. With the most recent technical advances in
ultrasound, the sonographer is now able to evaluate flow
dynamics of many blood vessels of the fetus, pediatric and adult
patient.

Properly trained sonographers are in demand in hospitals,
clinics, doctor's offices, marketing, applications, and mobile
services.

The program is accredited by the Joint Review Committee on
Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography. Graduates are
eligible to take the national certifying examination administered
by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers.

Diagnostic Medical Sonography is a selective admission, limited
enrollment program. Admission to Valencia does not imply
acceptance to the Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program;
students must apply and be accepted into the program. General
admission procedures for this program are found in the
Admissions section of this catalog. The Health Related Programs
Department provides academic and career counseling and
information about specific admission criteria.

Program expenses are given in the Financial section of this
catalog.

The program curriculum includes all courses that are required
for the Diagnostic Medical Sonography Associate in Science
Degree. A minimum grade of C must be achieved in all courses
identified in the program curriculum, including courses required
for admission.

After being accepted in the Diagnostic Medical Sonography
Program, the courses in the curriculum are progressive in nature,
with one course building on the preceding course. Because of
this progressive relationship, all courses in a session must be
completed with a grade of C or better in order to continue to the
next semester. If a student achieves less than a C or withdraws,
before or after the college deadline, from any course that is
required for the Diagnostic Medical Sonography Associate in
