Entry Assessment
Valencia wants you to be successful in meeting your educational
goals. To evaluate your level of preparation, the College requires
entry assessment for your initial placement in English, reading,
and mathematics courses.

If your assessment scores and/ or College-Ready Diploma are
more than two years old, you must take the CPTs for placement.

Requirements for Taking CPTs
Whether you are a full-time or a part-time student, if you do not
qualify for one of the exceptions that follow, you must complete
the CPTs (Computerized Placement Tests) prior to participating
in New Student Orientation/ Advisement and prior to
registration for any course that has a specific entry assessment
score as a prerequisite.

For placement purposes, each of the skill areas of English,
reading and mathematics are independent of each other which
means that you may place at the college level in one or more
areas and at the college-preparatory level in the other area( s).
You may use the highest score from any of the three assessments
(CPTs, ACT or SAT) for placement; for example, you may use
your CPT score for placement in mathematics and your SAT
score for placement in reading.

The Assessment and Placement Chart which gives scores and
corresponding course placements is included as part of this
section of the catalog.

If your skills are below the levels defined by the Valencia as
required for successful performance in a college-credit program,
Valencia may limit you to college-preparatory courses and any
other instruction for which you are adequately prepared.

Exceptions to Requirements for Taking CPTs
You will be exempt from taking the CPTs, unless needed as a
prerequisite for a specific course, if you provide written
documentation for one of the following exceptions:

1. You have ACT and/ or SAT scores less than two years old that
place you in college-level course work at Valencia.

2. You have attended a United States regionally-accredited
college or university in which English was the language of
instruction, have completed course work in English and/ or
mathematics with a grade of C or better, and you request to
waive assessment in the corresponding skill area( s).

3. You hold a college degree from a United States regionally-accredited
college or university in which English was the
language of instruction.

4. You are enrolled in another college or university and have
applied to Valencia for transient status.

5. You are enrolled for teacher recertification.

6. Your official Valencia record indicates that you are enrolled in
an Advanced Technical Certificate or a Technical Certificate
program.

7. Your official Valencia record indicates that you are enrolled
for job improvement or to take selected courses with no intent
for a Valencia degree.

8. You graduated from a Florida public high school with a
College-Ready Diploma less than two years ago.

9. You choose to begin with the most basic college-preparatory
courses: College-Preparatory Reading I, College-Preparatory
English I, and College-Preparatory Mathematics I.

Entry Assessment for Dual Enrollment Students
You must complete the CPTs or ACT or SAT prior to registration
for your first session. Your scores will be used for placement in
appropriate courses.

Entry Assessment for Students Seeking Applied
Technology Diplomas or Vocational Credit
Certificates

You must complete the appropriate entry assessment as required
by your Applied Technology Diploma or Vocational Credit
Certificate program. Contact the specific program office for
applicable requirements.

Entry Assessment for Non-Native Speakers of English
Instruction at Valencia is in the English language. Students must
have adequate mastery of the English language to pursue a
course of study for credit. If you are a seeking an applied
technology diploma, a vocational credit certificate or a degree or
you are a dual enrollment student, you must complete an
approved entry assessment. If you want to enroll in a course
with an English, reading or mathematics prerequisite and you
have not satisfied the prerequisite through successful completion
of course work, you must complete an approved entry
assessment.

Immigrants, Refugees and U. S. Citizens Who do not Speak
English as a Native Language
If you are an immigrant, refugee or U. S. citizen who does not
speak English as a native language, you may begin your
assessment with the CPTs (Computerized Placement Tests), if
you are comfortable and confident in your English skills.

If you know you want to work on your English skills or if you
need to improve your English skills, you should begin with the
LOEP assessment.

If your English proficiency is such that you are not required to
take English as a second language courses, the CPTs in English,
reading and mathematics will be used to place you in
appropriate courses.

If your placement level cannot be determined by the assessment
you take, you may be required to take additional assessment( s).

If you score Level 2, 3, 4, 5 or 6 on the LOEP or 133 -196 on the
computer version of the TOEFL or 450 -529 on the paper version
of the TOEFL, you will be required to complete English as a
second language courses. If you score less than 133 on the
computer version of the TOEFL or less than 450 on the paper
version of the TOEFL, you will be required to take the LOEP for
placement. Since Valencia does not teach beginning English, if
you need beginning English, you will be referred to a county
Adult Education ESOL (English for Speakers of Other
Languages) Program or to a private provider of English
instruction.

Non-Immigrants (International Students)
If you are an international student and wish to be admitted to
Valencia on a non-immigrant visa (for example, B-1, F-1, J-1, Q-1),
you must present a minimum score of 133 on the computer
version of the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) or
a minimum score of 450 on the paper version of the TOEFL or at
least a Level 4 on the LOEP (Levels of English Proficiency)
assessment given by Valencia.

You will be required to complete English as a second language
courses if you score 133-196 on the computer version of the
TOEFL or 450-529 on the paper version of the TOEFL or Level 4,
5 or 6 on the LOEP assessment.

If your score on the computer version of the TOEFL is below 133
or your score on the paper version of the TOEFL is below 450 or
your LOEP assessment score is below Level 4, you will not be
eligible for admission to Valencia until the minimum TOEFL or
LOEP assessment requirement is achieved.

State-Approved Entry Assessments
CPTs
At Valencia, entry assessment consists of the Computerized
Placement Tests (CPTs) from the College Board or the
paper/ pencil version of the CPTs called the Companion. The
Tests are Sentence Skills, Reading Skills, Arithmetic, Elementary
Algebra and College-Level Mathematics. You must apply to
Valencia before being assessed, and there is no additional charge
for the CPTs. They are given on all four campuses, and it is not
necessary to make an appointment to take this assessment. The
CPTs take approximately one and one-half to two hours and are
available days, evenings and on Saturdays. To take the CPTs,
visit the Assessment Center on any campus and bring an official
photo identification such as a driver's license or a passport.

To be used, your CPTs must be less than two years old.
Preparation for CPTs: You are encouraged to prepare for the
CPTs. To do so, you may review the Student Guide to the
Computerized Placement Tests (CPTs) produced by the College
Board; a packet containing the Student Guide and other
information on preparation for the CPTs is available in
Admissions. You also may review practice tests available at the
Reserve Desk in the Learning Resources Center on any campus.
In addition, workbooks, which are sold in the campus
bookstores, include review materials and practice tests for self-directed
study and for for use in review workshops.

Review workshops are offered at Valencia throughout the year
for a small fee; the schedule of workshops is included in the
packet available in Admissions. The workshops are offered to
help you review the major skills assessed by the CPTs; they are
not designed to teach skills you have not learned previously.

It is important that you are well prepared when you come to
take the CPTs. Retakes are not permitted without written
permission and documentation of additional preparation.

ACT and SAT
If you have taken the ACT and/ or SAT and your scores place
you in college-level course work in English, reading and/ or
mathematics at Valencia, you may use these scores as an
alternative to the corresponding sections of the CPTs. You may
use your ACT and/ or SAT scores if they are less than two years
old. If you have the required SAT-I or Enhanced ACT scores, you
must submit an official score report or an official transcript with
the scores to the Admissions Office. You should bring a copy of
your score report or a transcript which shows your scores when
you come to an Orientation/ Advisement session.

Important note: ACT and SAT mathematics scores can be used
only for placement in Intermediate Algebra (MAT 1033C). To
place in college-level (Gordon Rule) mathematics courses, the
CPTs must be taken, and a minimum score of 90 must be
achieved on Elementary Algebra.

LOEP and TOEFL
The LOEP and TOEFL are assessments of English proficiency for
non-native speakers of English. Most students take only one of
these two assessments. The LOEP (Levels of English Proficiency)
assessment is given through the Assessment Centers at Valencia.
You must have applied to Valencia and paid the college
application fee to take the LOEP assessment; there is no
additional charge to take it. To take the LOEP assessment, visit
the Assessment Center on any campus and bring an official
photo identification such as a driver's license or a passport.

The TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) is given in
test centers throughout the world. To use a TOEFL score at
Valencia, you must submit an official score report.

TABE
The Tests of Adult Basic Education (TABE) from McGraw Hill
given at Valencia measure reading, mathematics, and language
skills for use in some Applied Technology Diploma and
Vocational Credit Certificate programs. To take the TABE, visit
the Assessment Center at East, Osceola or West Campus.
