Energy Wise
(The first in a series of columns created by the Energy Team)

In response to the continuous rise in energy costs and the need to preserve our resources, Valencia Community College has created the Committee on Sustainability and Energy Savings. Valencia Facilities has formed an Energy Team to help identify ways to conserve energy use college-wide and to apply the recommendations of the committee. The primary goal of this team is to eliminate or minimize energy waste while maintaining a comfortable and safe learning environment. The Energy Team will institute several initiatives aimed at saving or conserving energy as the committee recommends the adoption of a number of no-cost and low-cost ideas in the routine operation of facilities.
To help conserve electricity, the Energy Team is asking for the support of all faculty, staff and students in turning off all unused lights in unoccupied areas. With your help we will start saving dollars on our annual utility bills. To serve as a reminder we will be posting labels by the light switches. The labels will read: "Please turn off lights when not in use."

Energy conservation and efficiency go a long way in preserving our planet's rich natural resources and promoting a healthy environment. In this section you'll find simple things that everyone can do to help reduce energy consumption.

Useful Energy Tip: Turn off non-essential lights and appliances. The electricity generated by fossil fuels for a single home puts more carbon dioxide into the air than two average cars.

Energy Facts: Recycling one glass bottle saves enough energy to light a 100-watt bulb for four hours.

News from Procurement

College Policy 6Hx28:07-26 and Chapter 112 of the Florida Statutes defines the Code of Ethics for Public Employees. Two issues that fall under the Procurement process include: 1. Solicitation and acceptance of gifts - no employee shall solicit or accept anything of value to the recipient, including a gift, loan, reward, promise of future employment, favor or service, based upon any understanding that the official action or judgment of the employee would be influenced thereby. 2. Doing business with the college - no employee, acting in a private capacity, shall rent, lease or sell any realty, goods or services to the college.

Your College Procurement Staff belong to the National Association of Educational Buyers (NAEB). This organization enables us to network with other colleges and universities for best procurement practices, training and networking. The following is a brief history of the organization. Since the 1920's, NAEB has been the non-profit professional association primarily dedicated to serving higher education purchasing officers in the U.S. and Canada. NAEB's mission is to facilitate the development, exchange and practice of effective and ethical procurement principles and techniques within higher education and associated communities, through continuing education, networking, public information and advocacy. Members of the association founded the E&I Cooperative Service as an important benefit of NAEB membership. Currently, over 1,500 colleges and universities are members. NAEB is a member-focused association providing progressive knowledge management in strategic sourcing, supply chain, materials and logistics for procurement professionals. NAEB provides professional development and networking opportunities regionally and nationally. These meetings, workshops and seminars provide knowledge transfer in procurement ranging from beginning to advanced professionals and are conducted throughout the year and across the nation.

Please remember to contact your procurement staff before entering into any type of agreements to procure goods or services on behalf of the college.

P-card users take note! You may now use your P-card to order from Markmaster. Please add the following updated link to your favorites. https://www.mmmarketplace.com/valencia.aspx

Visions and Voices Presents Tim Dorsey

Tim Dorsey, whose writing style has earned him comparisons to fellow Florida writers Carl Hiaasen and Elmore Leonard, will give a reading in the first floor of the West campus library (Bldg. 6) on Dec. 8 at 1 p.m. followed by a book signing at 2 p.m. His visit is one in a series of featured readings and performances under Valencia's Visions and Voices distinguished artists' series.

Voices of Valencia

This spring the Voices of Valencia will be celebrating their American dreams in song with concerts that will include a variety of music with special emphasis on Patriotic and Americana music. The Voices of Valencia was started only nine years ago, with a modest group of just 25 voices and has grown to a choral mass numbering over 100! Then, just show up the first night of class and be placed in your section on Tuesday, January 10, 7-9 p.m. East Campus, rm. 3-124. No audition required!!! All levels of experience welcome! Remember 1st time students: choir members must apply to the college by December 16th and anyone can join--college students, faculty, staff, community members and senior citizens. Update to HR and Payroll Phone Extensions

Stanley Stone's phone extension is 8075 and not 8000. The 8000 extension has been given to the security desk to keep consistent with the other campuses. Therefore, Stan's extension has been changed to 8075.

The extension for Daisy Green, Human Resources, was changed after the list of new phone numbers was published in the Bulletin. Her correct telephone extension is 8052.

The Payroll dept. has requested that their numbers be published again due to the number of phone calls coming into wrong extensions.

Thank you.

Dear Valencia Friends: My heartfelt thanks to all for your many kindnesses and warm wishes as I leave Valencia. This has truly been my "home." I had always hoped I would be fortunate enough to retire from the same wonderful place that nurtured my early teaching years. However, I want to provide care and support for my mom as we cope with her Alzheimer's. I have taken a nursing faculty position close to home. The understanding and support from the nursing program and college has overwhelmed me! Deepest thanks to all.
