News from Procurement
Beware of solicitors calling you regarding your copier toner needs.
This is a scam and the college will be billed an over inflated price
for the goods. Our current copier companies DO NOT call employees.
Orders are placed when needed, and the company supply/service phone
number is found on the unit. In many cases, the toner cartridge is
included in our service agreement. All invoices for supplies or
service should be sent to Procurement at MC 4-42. Any questions or
concerns? Call Procurement at x5532, E-mail us at or visit our
web-site at
http://valenciacc.edu/procurement.
With Thanksgiving fast approaching, we are notifying our vendors
not to deliver any items while the college is closed. If you would
like a copy of the flyer we send out, you can download it from our
web-site:
P-Card holders beware of E-mail scams from banks. We have been
informed by several users that they have received E-mails from banks
asking them to verify personal information. Our P-Card provider,
JPMorgan/Chase will not notify you via E-mail. All administrative
changes (on both sides) will be coordinated through the Procurement
Office and we will notify you of any changes or updates.

Valencia awarded $2 million to enhance
nursing program
Valencia will again lead an initiative to increase the enrollment,
retention and success rates of students in the College's Nursing
program. Valencia will be joined in the initiative, known as
Partners for Building Healthy Communities (PBHC), by Seminole and
Lake-Sumter Community Colleges, as well as 12 hospital partners,
nine other education partners, and Workforce Central Florida. The $2
million award comes from U.S. Department of Labor's Employment and
Training Administration: Community-Based Job Training Grants.
PBHC's goal is to increase the number of
students who graduate and pass state licensure requirements to
become a Registered Nurse. Census Bureau data show that nursing jobs
in Central Florida will grow by 34.5% through 2010, and when job
openings due to retirements and separations are factored in the
demand is greater. Regional workforce data show a need for more than
5,300 nurses in Central Florida through 2012, and annually, an
average 868 new RNs are needed to meet the region's demand.
Valencia and its partners, Seminole and
Lake-Sumter, lack the training capacity to address the high demand
for RNs in the region. The colleges have identified issues such as
student academic preparation for a career in nursing; limited
clinical environments to enhance student learning prior to entering
the workforce; limited lab and computer equipment and software to
support clinical instruction; and the need for more faculty and
curriculum development opportunities and other instructional
enhancements.
PBHC proposed a variety of training activities,
which include clinical training in medical and clinical simulations;
clinical training sites at partner hospitals for all students;
graduation and state licensing test preparation training; academic
preparation for prospective nursing students through tutoring and
advising; and transition to college-level nursing programs through
established academic programs such as Tech Prep and Dual Enrollment.
The partnership has also identified a number of
ways to potentially increase capacity for nursing programs, such as
development of clinical simulation equipment and software to provide
highly specialized clinical simulation training that is aligned with
A.S. degree and national licensing standards; creation of an
intensive regional Faculty and Curriculum Development Institute to
support clinical curricular modules, faculty skills sets, and
simulation technologies; and development and expansion of online
courses to support students who are interested in re-taking the
State licensing test. The grant funding began November 1, and will
be expended over a three-year period.
Help needed with Part-time Hourly Time
Sheets (Form HR-28)
As Valencia grows, so does the amount of paperwork submitted and
processed every pay period. The Payroll Dept would appreciate your
efforts in correcting the increasing problems we are having with the
hourly time sheets submitted to our department. Correcting these
errors is very time consuming. Here are some things you can do to
help:
. Please follow the Hourly Part-time & Student Time Sheet Schedule
reporting hours worked for the periods on this schedule.
. Verify that the correct budget number is recorded and the correct
GL Code is checked.
. Make sure the top portion of the time sheet is completed, hourly
rate, hours worked, daily line total is correct, total dollar amount
due employee, etc.
. If the employee is entitled to Shift Differential, Parking or
Overtime, please record those hours in the proper section.
. When an employee works over 29 hours, make sure an Exception Form
has been completed and approved prior to the employee exceeding the
29 hour limit. Attach the form as backup to the time sheet.
. Employees working more than a 6-hour work day are required to take
at least a half hour meal break.
. If an employee works in more than one department, supervisors
should verify that there are no overlapping hours being reported on
either time sheet.
. Verify the hours recorded on each timesheet.
. Make sure the time sheet is signed by the employee and approved by
the supervisor.
. Please make sure the timesheet is legible.
. Make sure timesheets are submitted by the due dates on the
schedule. Employees will not get paid on time if time sheets are
submitted late.
. The Hourly Part-time & Student Time Sheet Schedule is on the
Valencia Home Page under Human Resource then Employee Resources.
. Form (FA-63) Part-time Work over 29 Hours is on the Valencia Home
Page under Valencia Forms Online.
We would like to thank you in advance for your efforts to eliminate
errors on the Part time Hourly time sheets.
Kudos
Dr. Diane Reed, Pathways Into Nursing Retention (PIN)
Specialist, and Dr. Linda Speranza, Director of the PIN
Program, were invited to present "Pathways Into Nursing: A Model
Community College Program Helping to Address America's Healthcare
Crisis" at The College Board - Forum 2005 in New York City on
November 1. Typically a maximum of four model programs from colleges
and universities across the nation are invited to present at the
annual Forum.
Corinne B. Linton has authored the recently published Quick
Study Health Chart entitled "An Introduction to Health Care." The
six page laminated chart addresses topics in the areas of: health
care financing, consent, medical records, confidentiality,
Medicare/Medicaid/SCHIP, treatment rights, advance directives,
managed care models, hierarchy of health care, patients'
rights/responsibilities, physician/patient relationship and health
professionals.
Helen Clarke and Philip Bishop's article, "Faculty
Competency by Design: A Model for Institutional Transformation" was
published in the 2006 To Improve the Academy: Resources for Faculty,
Instructional and Organizational Development.
John Stover, Coordinator of Recruitment and Retention of
Ethnically Diverse Students, was awarded the Lowell Stafford Courage
Award by the Orange County Corrections Department (OCCD) on
November 3, 2005. The Lowell Stafford Courage Award is the
highest honor that a volunteer may receive
from OCCD and was created to honor one person annually who embodies
the dedication and commitment to volunteerism. Volunteering is a
serious commitment and represents one of the highest forms of
self-sacrifice. It is the spirit of volunteerism that builds and
rebuilds lives, develops supportive communities, and allows the
efforts of one to impact a few, the efforts of a few to impact
hundreds, and the efforts of hundreds to impact thousands.
Lillian Tribino has earned her Master of Arts Degree in
Organizational Management from the University of Phoenix Online
Campus. This degree was possible thanks to educational institutions
that cater to working adults through online instruction, personal
perseverance, family support and the life long passion for learning.
Submissions to the Bulletin are encouraged, so please e-mail your

Assistant in Marketing and Media Relations. Deadline for submission
