New Human Resources Procedures Effective Immediately

Using Employee Identification Numbers Instead of Social Security Numbers - When preparing forms for submission to Human Resources and/or Payroll, please be aware of procedures now in place to help protect employees from identity theft. Effective immediately, Employee Identification Numbers should be used instead of Social Security Numbers on all forms where such an identifier is required.

Human Resources will be working with the Office of Information Technology to update on-line forms, replacing the line currently used for a Social Security Number, with a line for an Employee ID Number. Lists of employee names and identification numbers are being prepared for distribution to administrators. Employee ID Numbers are also printed near the top of each pay check and direct deposit stub.

NOTE: The Employee ID Number should not be confused with the VID number used in Atlas and/or Banner. These identifying numbers are not the same and are not interchangeable. Human Resources and Payroll cannot access employee information with a VID number and VID numbers should not be used on HR/Payroll forms. Please contact Human Resources at extension 1333 if you have any questions.

"Library" Is Back!

In response to popular demand, common usage, and an evolved concept of the resource, we are returning to the use of the word Library instead of Learning Resources Center (LRC). The change has been made in the current catalog, and signage will be changed gradually along with regularly-scheduled facelifts and remodeling. Please adjust literature and web postings from your own area as you revise and develop materials, especially those intended for students. With everyone's cooperation, we can smoothly ease into this shift. Thanks to all for your help in getting the word out (and the new one in)!

Richard Sansone, professor of EAP and Portuguese on West Campus, was selected to participate in the Center for International Business and Education Research (CIBER) Faculty Development Program in Brazil, Argentina and Chile earlier this summer. The MERCOSUR faculty program is just one of the professional development programs CIBER offers "to increase and promote the nation's capacity for international understanding and competitiveness." Faculty wishing more information about CIBER are encouraged to contact Professor Sansone and/or visit the CIBER site at http://ciberweb.msu.edu/.

The Bureau of Health Professions, a division of the Health Resources and Services Administration (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services), recently recognized Linda Speranza, West Campus nursing professor, for her work in helping diverse and disadvantaged high school students become professional nurses. Speranza received the Bureau's Associate Administrator Achievement Award in "recognition of outstanding leadership and achievements in supporting basic nursing education."

Speranza is project director and co-author of Valencia's Pathways Into Nursing (PIN) program. Pathways Into Nursing is a unique course of study created for ethnically diverse and disadvantaged students, particularly Hispanic, that takes them from high school through the community college level, culminating in an Associate in Science Degree in Nursing and RN licensure. By the third year of the program in 2005, 130 students from three partnership high schools in Central Florida have been admitted into the program, with 21 currently participating at the high school level and 80 in pre-nursing or nursing courses at Valencia. Program participants receive personal and academic counseling and individualized instruction in academic areas of difficulty, participate in enrichment activities, and work with peer tutors and mentors.

Thank you

On behalf of my family, we express our sincere appreciation and heartfelt thanks for the tremendous outpouring of love and sympathy during the passing of my mother, Theresa Manigault Walton. Words cannot adequately convey how blessed we feel. Thanks to the Valencia Family for your support and encouragement.
