A weekly publication for the staff & faculty of Valencia Community College

Vol. XXXIV, No. 31

August 15, 2005

This Week at Valencia.

No meetings scheduled

Valencia works with international partners in Namibia, Africa

The Polytechnic of Namibia (PON), Africa, Kapi'olini Community College (KCC), Southeast Community College (SECC), and Valencia are partners in a two-year USAID grant to help increase the capacity of the Polytechnic's Hotel School to provide high-quality training that prepares Namibian students for jobs in Namibia's growing tourism sector. The main objectives are to help produce a sustainable planning, management and evaluation system for the operations of the Hotel School program, and a structure that embraces faculty and staff professional development and responsiveness to meeting the needs of the tourism industry.

In order to aid in this team effort, Valencia staff Dan Dutkofski, Dale Husbands, Jim Inglis, LeSena Jones and Joan Tiller spent two weeks in Namibia along with two representatives from Southeast Community College and one from Kapi'olini Community College to review and recommend methods to the hospitality and tourism programs at the Polytechnic College.

The team met with the Polytechnic's staff and faculty to review their academic programs in detail. They also met with various employers, businesses and city officials from the community to assess their workforce training and education needs. In addition, two Hospitality and Tourism DACUM's were conducted with over 30 industry representatives participating in defining the skills and knowledge needed for their workers. The visit was very successful.

A summary of the findings was submitted to the Polytechnic College Rector (Dr. Tjama Tjivikua) with recommendations for restructuring their programs, developing career path-short-term training options in response to industry needs, commercializing the Hotel School and achieving an appropriate balance with its use as a training site, and increasing community outreach and partnerships with schools, industry, government agencies and community organizations.

The Polytechnic College was very receptive to the recommendations from the educational partners (KCC, SECC, & VCC) who will continue to work together and provide the PON with the support needed to help them accomplish the goals. On August 23, six students from the Polytechnic College will participate in an eight week internship experience at Valencia and work at Universal Orlando.

Thank you.

A special thanks for the calls, donations, cards, visitations and prayers for the recent death of my father. Your thoughtfulness will be cherished forever.

Academic Assembly is right around the corner! All Faculty & Professional Staff -

The fall term start up is rapidly approaching. As in the past, we will gather at the Academic Assembly which is scheduled for Wednesday, August 24, 2005 on the East Campus at the Performing Arts Center. Prior to the program, breakfast will be served in the Cafeteria on East Campus (building 5) for all attendees. After breakfast, there will be both a presentation and ample time for dialog. Please make your plans to participate.

This year's theme is "The Year of Think" (related to Valencia's core competency of "think") and many important topics/dates will be discussed. This gathering will provide an opportunity to celebrate the achievements of several of our colleagues and to take a fresh look together at our progress as a college.

As always, the first priority for the week will be preparing to serve our students, therefore, we promise to respect your time. Please take time to review the agenda.
With warm anticipation,

-Sandy and Louise
