News from Procurement

will need to be turned into Purchase Orders by June 30, 2005. Any

Information from Mail Services: Like other service departments at
the college, Mail Services is watching expenses, while seeking
methods to become more efficient in providing services to you, our
customers. We are experimenting with a local pre-sort company that
allows us to set our postage meter at .35 cents as opposed to the
regular rate of .37 cents for regular mail. The preliminary results
thus far, show that we are already saving roughly $300-$500 per
month through this company.
On the expense side of the equation, a recent analysis shows that
the college has spent in excess of $10,000.00 this fiscal year on
just express mailings. Understandably, express mail services are
necessary from time to time to fulfill the College's mission. Given
this, we respectfully request that you utilize the express mail
services only when your package absolutely, positively, has to be
there overnight. Thank you in advance for your assistance. Please be
assured that we
will continue to look for ways that we can improve our service to
you. Suggestions for improvement are encouraged and should be sent
to Ed Ames, eames@valenciacc.edu. Mail Services has also established
a web site that provides the latest mail codes, delivery times and
contact personnel, at
http://www.valenciacc.edu/procurement/mailservices.asp
Procurement has successfully rolled out the Procurement Card Program
College Wide! If you are interested in learning more about the
Valencia credit card, visit our web-site at:
http://valenciacc.edu/procurement/ProcurementCard.asp.
P-card holders are reminded to assess their budgets for the next
Fiscal Year so that their accounts can be set up in a timely manner.
An informational session will be held this month on East and West
Campuses so that all questions and concerns can be addressed. Card
holders and coordinators will be notified via e-mail with details.
News from the College Learning Council
The 2004-2005 College Year is the fourth year of the college's
journey in collaborative college governance. As the end of the
fiscal year approaches, each of the governing councils highlights
its accomplishments in an annual report. Accomplishments of the
College Learning Council include:
Completing work on the Valencia Sabbatical Policy. The policy was
developed as a collaborative effort, with input from many different
constituents. Administrators, faculty, and professional staff are
included in the policy, which is different from similar policies in
the past.
Reviewing the tenure process, based on feedback from the first class
of tenure graduates since new tenure processes have been put in
place. The Tenure Summit was held in fall, and resulted in
recommendations for revisions to the tenure training manual for
tenure review panels at the College.
Commissioning a Work Team for Labs and Student Support Centers. The
charge of the team includes the review of existing mathematics and
communications labs and support centers on all campuses; and
formulating recommendations based on a college-wide vision, mission,
outcomes, and assessments for the labs and centers.
Commissioning a Work Team for Alternative Delivery of Instruction at
the College. The Team will establish a college-wide vision and
mission, as well as policies and procedures for alternative
instructional formats at the College.

Christine Evans, Security Manager of West, DTC and Sand Lake has
achieved the designation of Certified Instructor in Domestic
Preparedness by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and

already begun delivering this training to security staff on a
college-wide basis.
A poem titled "On Recognizing Saints" by Marilyn McLatchey,
Professor of Humanities, East Campus, has been selected as the
winner of the Annie Finch Prize for Poetry. The poem will be
published in the Fall/Winter 05-06 issue of The National Poetry
Review.
With the assistance and direction of Dr. Paula Gastenveld, Provost,
West Campus, Hal White, Dean of Health Sciences, and Ray Taylor,
Program Director for EMS, Valencia Community College has partnered
with Eastern New Mexico University to provide paramedic clinical
training for 21 special forces personnel from Kirkland Air Force
Base, Roswell, NM. These 21 students have enrolled in Valencia's
Paramedic program and will undergo intensive and critical care
training at the West Campus followed by clinical internships with
Orange County Fire Rescue, Orlando Regional Medical Center, Florida
Hospital Orlando, and Osceola Regional Medical Center.

At the completion of the program, the students will return to New
Mexico for 6 additional weeks of aero medical training and rapid
helicopter evacuation exercises. Following graduation, the majority
of the students will be deployed to Iraq, providing first line
out-of-hospital medical care for both U.S. and coalition soldiers
along with the civilian population.
Submissions to the Bulletin are encouraged, so please e-mail your
achievements, awards, recognitions, and relevant information for the
college community to Mary Jane Jones, Staff Assistant in Marketing
and Media Relations. Deadline for submission is 5 p.m. on the
Tuesday preceding each Friday's distribution. Mary Jane can be
