The following faculty and staff members will be honored with Excellence Awards for their outstanding accomplishments in improving learning at the college: Librarian Mark Bollenback, Math Professor Al Groccia, Winter Park Executive Dean Michele McArdle, Pathways in Nursing Retention Specialist Diane Reed, and Center for Global Languages Director Jennifer Robertson. Congratulations to each of our honorees! In addition, the following Valencians have had their proposals accepted and will be presenting at the conference: Amy Bosley, Barry Bunn, David Hosman, Will Johnson, Bijan Moeinian, Daryl Peterson, Diane Reed, Tami Rogers, Kathy Smith, Linda Speranza, Susan Stone, and Pat Woodberry.

Dr. Shugart will also be present to accept Valencia's $10,000 award from the MetLife Foundation Initiative for Student Success. Based on our 2004 Community College Survey of Student Engagement (CCSSE) results, Valencia was one of four colleges selected this year as a "Best-Practice College" for our "exemplary efforts in helping students stay in school to achieve their educational goals." Part of the award allows for the travel of Valencia student and education major Lynn Guzower to attend the conference. Lynn will also participate on a panel facilitated by well-known educational researcher and author, Vincent Tinto.

News from the Faculty Council

The 2004-2005 College Year is the fourth year of the college's journey in collaborative college governance. As the end of the fiscal year approaches, each of the governing councils highlights accomplishments in an annual report.

Accomplishments of the Faculty Council include:

. Passage by faculty of a new constitution that allows the Council to serve as one of the College's four governing councils. The new constitution includes procedures for proportional representation to the Council from the four campuses, popular election of the Council President-Elect, and allowances for faculty serving the institution on release time to remain members of the College-Wide Faculty Association.

. Passage by faculty of two additional addendums to the Faculty Compensation plan: the Professional Development and the Institutional Effectiveness components. The additional addendums are important to the continued phase-in of the Compensation Plan.

. Collaboration with the Learning Leadership Team and the Instructional Affairs Council to improve faculty engagement with students. Opportunities for communications were broadened through revisions to the workload form in terms of Student Engagement (office) and Service to the Institution (campus) hours.
