Kerouac Celebration
On Saturday, February 23, Valencia Community College will host a free literary event in continuation of the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the publication of Jack Kerouac's book, On the Road. The event will take place at the East Campus Performing Arts Center from 1-5 p.m.
A novelist, poet, and artist, Jack Kerouac is an iconic symbol of the Beat Generation. While enjoying popular but little critical success during his own lifetime, Kerouac is now considered one of America's most important authors. Having lived for a time in Orlando, he is also a part of Florida's artistic and cultural heritage.
Valencia is hosting this event in an effort to promote the discovery, development, and celebration of Florida culture and to foster a deeper understanding and appreciation of the arts throughout the region.
Former Poet Laureate and Kerouac fan, Billy Collins, who visited Valencia is 2002, will return to the college for a reading and book signing, beginning at 3:35 p.m. Collins is known for his wit and deceptively humorous poems which ultimately reveal a profound meaning.
Valencia students, faculty and local poets, including former Kerouac House artist in residence, Darlyn Finch, will also give readings. Student readings will take place from 1-2 p.m. and local poet readings will take place from 2:05-3:35 p.m.
This event, which is free and open to the public, is made possible through a partnership with the Kerouac House Project of Orlando, Inc. and is sponsored in part by Valencia Foundation, Darden Restaurants and Darden Foundation. For more information please contact Nichole McPherson at nmcpherson@valenciacc.edu or 407-582-3121.

The projects were judged by a jury of three architects using the following criteria: innovative response to educational program; aesthetics and use of materials; flexibility for community use; technology provisions; barrier free accessibility; relationship of space and expandability; and site development. Congratulations to C. T. Hsu and Associates for their design.
Thank You
