"A nation, like a person, has a mind...that must be kept informed and alert, that must know itself, that understands the hopes and needs of its neighbors - all the other nations that live within the narrowing circle of the world."     Franklin Roosevelt

International Education Week is an opportunity to celebrate the benefits of international education and exchange worldwide. This joint initiative of the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Education is part of continuing efforts to promote programs that prepare Americans for a global environment and attract future leaders from abroad to study, learn, and exchange experiences in the United States. This year’s theme is Fostering Global Citizenship and Respect. Look for activities on your campus and join in, learn and enjoy!

Get a jump start this week by attending a presentation by Cedza D’Lamini, Honors Program Distinguished Speaker on  Wednesday, November 7, 7 p.m., East Campus Performing Arts Center. It's not enough to be Prince of Swaziland and the grandson of Nelson Mandela -- Cedza Dlamini is an impassioned humanitarian, social entrepreneur and visionary. His vision is to create a unified global order by establishing global networks of young leaders working collectively to address world problems, such as HIV/AIDS, poverty, hunger, and illiteracy. He travels the world helping young people realize two things: their connectedness to one another and their power to change their surroundings. Brazilian Film Screening: Eu Tu Eles (Me You Them) - Reception 6-7 p.m.; Screening 7-9 p.m., West Campus: 5-111. Director Andrucha Waddington took four years to complete this strikingly beautiful film based on a true story set in Brazil’s arid northeastern hinterland. Eu Tu Eles relates the humorous and carefully drawn life story of a peasant woman and the happy-if unconventional-home she creates with three men. This postcard from the “sertao” has been produced with great dignity, sensitivity and respect, and is perfectly complemented by the music of Gilberto Gil. Award recipient at film festivals worldwide, ranging from Cannes to Cartagena, this film will surely delight its Valencia audience. (Rated for 12 years.)  Presented by Professor Richard Sansone as part of the Chesley Magruder Foundation & First Union National Bank of Florida 2007 Humanities Fellowship.

Director João Falcão has scored another hit with this edgy, fast paced, and gripping story in which dreams trump reality and love conquers time. The award winning Time Machine chronicles a young man’s Kamikaze crusade to bring the civilized world to his godforsaken town in a desperate effort to keep the love of his life. This rich cultural tapestry puts a fresh spin on universal themes as it draws audiences into the magical realism that is the northeast of Brazil. Don’t miss the Orlando premier of this enchanting, cinematic fable of the transformative power of love. (Rated for All Audiences.)  Presented by: Professor Richard Sansone as part of the Chesley Magruder Foundation & First Union National Bank of Florida 2007 Humanities Fellowship.

Procurement News

There’s a new GL in town! Account code (formally known as GL code) 705070 has been added and must be used for Minor Tech Equipment < $1,000 NOT tagged by Property Management.  Items include monitors, printers and PDA’s.

The Procurement department has successfully implemented a collegewide copier refresh program that began in February 2006. With an estimated 150 copiers spread out through the different campuses, we are 70% complete in our replacement of old worn out copiers. Because there is no funding for copiers except for the yearly Strategic Equipment List, monies have been distributed more efficiently with departments being responsible for additional copy costs. A small sample of copier costs includes:

  • $8,000 is the average new cost to purchase a multifunctional unit (copy/print/scan/fax/e-mail)
  • $250 is the average lease per month for multifunctional unit
  • $50 per unit, per month for service agreement, which includes first 5,000 copies and toner cartridges for unit
  • .0089 per copy is the charge from the vendor for additional copies
  • $35 per box is the average cost for 15,000 staples
  • $150,000 is what the college spends on copy paper in one year
  • 5822 cases of paper ordered in one year
  • 29,275,000 sheets of paper used in one year by the college

As you can see, it is a costly operation! And there is no such thing as a ‘free’ copy. With installing these multifunctional units, the college does save on: replacing small desktop printers, purchasing printer toners, purchasing desktop scanners, and purchasing fax machines.

To learn more about the copier refresh program, please visit our web-site at: http://www.valenciacc.edu/ procurement/facultystaff_FAQs.asp

Library’s Online Resources

You may not recognize the "LINCC" name, but have you ever used online resources to search for a book, find an article or access a database through one of Valencia's libraries? LINCC is the portal for all of Florida's 28 community colleges to share an incredible amount of material, a service that most of us take for granted! Periodically LINCC administers a user satisfaction survey. This feedback is used to evaluate the users' experience. Please take a few minutes to complete this online survey. You will be able to identify your status (student, faculty, administrator, other). The 11 question survey runs through November 16 and is available at http://survey.cclaflorida.org/surveys/student2007.htm
