This year's Learning Day is scheduled for October 23, and will be held on Valencia's East Campus. Learning Day is a college-wide assembly built into the college calendar in order for full-time employees to have the opportunity to come together and participate in a wide range of workshops to support professional and personal development and collectively focus on Valencia's learning-centered mission.
A representative team of Learning Day planners chose the theme "Valencia's Values" for Learning Day 2007. During the day, workshops will be held during four different time slots and will focus around three varied pathways – Personal Enrichment, Learning and Professional Develolpment – providing multiple opportunities for everyone during each time slot.
Check-in begins at 8 a.m. with a continental breakfast. Signs will direct you to the check-in tables. An important difference this year is there will be no pre-registration for specific workshops. After checking in, you will be free to choose among the options available during each of the four time slots. To help you select your top choices in advance, you will receive the Learning Day Program via inter-office mail in the next few days. We encourage you to take time to review the offerings and to select your top two or three choices. This will enable you to have two "back up" sessions already in mind in case your first choice session room is full. A copy of the program can also been downloaded at http://valenciacc.edu/learningday/
See you there!
Energy Wise
The Valencia Energy Team is pleased to announce that Valencia has executed a contract with Siemens Building Technology Group to start construction upgrades of the chiller plant on West Campus. These upgrades involve renovating the old plant and installing new energy efficient chillers to supply energy needs for all existing buildings as well as the new buildings that are being constructed. Our energy conservation efforts have paid off in terms of a substantial savings on our utilities cost for last school year. Our goal is to attain a level of conservation competence that will eliminate the need to increase our energy budget and at the same time upgrade our infrastructure to accommodate the most technologically advanced systems that will move us into a carbon neutral position.
Please do your part in helping us to conserve energy where necessary. These efforts are as simple as tuning off the lights in your office or other unused space when you leave, and use the blue paper recycling bins as directed.
Energy Myth: Fluorescent lights should only be switched once or twice a day, to avoid power surges and drastically reduced lamp light.
Energy Fact: Global paper use has grown more than six-fold since 1950. One-fifth of all wood harvested in the world ends up in paper. It takes two to three and half tons of trees to make one ton of paper. Pulp and paper is the fifth largest industrial consumer of energy in the world, using as much power to produce a ton of product as the iron and steel industry. In some countries including the United States, paper accounts for nearly 40 percent of all municipal solid waste. Making paper uses more water per ton than any other product in the world. News from Procurement
After several months of using the new Banner finance software, we are beginning to understand the system and how it works. More important, how to update/modify/change an existing document, because we all know that we live in a non-perfect world.
A way to make changes easier down the road is if we start when creating the requisition.

By un-checking the Document Level Accounting box in INB Banner when creating a requisition, will allow us to add to the PO if necessary using a different FOAP. It is strongly recommended to create all requisitions by un-checking this box for any changes that may occur once the requisition is a Purchase Order.
Surplused Copiers - if a copier has been sent to surplus, it has been removed from all service maintenance contracts, including toner cartridges and staples. Should a department pick up one of these surplused units, it is the responsibility of that department to maintain all service and supply calls. A purchase order must be generated prior to ordering. If you are not sure if your unit is covered under a maintenance agreement, please call extension 5532 for verification.
New Office Depot catalogs available - the new 2007-2008 Business Solutions Division catalog is now available. To receive your new BSD catalog, simply add the SKU 337-412 to your next order.
