Focus on the Workplace for Spring and Summer Terms
Don’t miss out on your opportunity to participate in Valencia’s “Focus on the Workplace” program. We are now accepting applications for Spring Term and Summer Term-A, 2008. This is a great opportunity to gain information about today’s job market...get a different perspective...learn about the future trends and technological advances in your field, and validate “first hand” the critical skills your students need to be successful in the workplace.
All full-time, tenure or tenure-track faculty, full-time counselors, advisors and professional staff are eligible to apply with supervisor approval. Eligible faculty are released from two 3-credit hour classes to participate. Advisors, counselors and professional staff are released for 40-80 hours (one-two weeks) and can participate any time during the year.
For more information and to get an application, go to http://valenciacc.edu/ focus/ or call LeSena Jones at ext. 3344. The deadline to apply is October 31.
October is breast cancer awareness month.
Making Strides Against Breast Cancer is your opportunity to honor breast cancer survivors, educate women about prevention and early detection and raise funds and awareness to help us achieve a day without breast cancer. The Making Strides Against Breast Cancer 5K Walk is Saturday, October 27 at Lake Eola in downtown Orlando. Registration is from 7-8:15 a.m. and the walk begins at 8:30 a.m.
Body For Life update - We are excited at the interest we have received about the Valencia 12-week challenge. The official kick-off for the program will be October 15. We encourage you to get started early if you would like to. If you are interested in taking the challenge but have not signed up, please contact Debi Jakubcin at ext. 2281 or djakubcin@valenciacc.edu.
Wellness Fair - October 23, during Learning Day, from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. in the East Campus gym, 6-105.
Take a healthy move forward by visiting the Wellness Fair and touring the seven components of Wellness. As you complete each component station, be sure to get a sticker. Once you have them all, you’ll be eligible to enter the reward circle where you can claim your final gift.
You will have an opportunity to visit the Blue Cross Blue Shield station and fill out a Health Risk Assessment form. Enjoy free 10 minute chair massages, Yoga and Tai Chi instruction and get information abpit Weight Watchers, My Girlfriend’s Kitchen, Blood Analysis, Valencia’s Dental Hygiene program, Aura Visions, MD Anderson Cancer Center, Central Florida Educator’s Credit Union, Bank of America and much much more. There will also be an opportunity to sign up for flu shots. It will be a great time and we are looking forward to seeing you there.
News from Procurement
SPD Funds and the Procurement Card - Before using a Procurement Card to pay for conference registrations using the SPD budget, please contact Vicki Pipkin at ext. 8017, in the Human Resources department for authorization and to verify funding availability.
Office Supply Companies - With hundreds of office supply companies, large and small, wanting to conduct business with Valencia, we have carefully studied and evaluated what the market has to offer. The needs of the college come first and those needs include: pricing, delivery, convenience, variety and billing. While you may find something a dollar or two cheaper someplace else, we have found that Office Depot and our own bookstore are the only preferred suppliers for office supplies. Our pricing with Office Depot is from the US Communities contract that allows a 40% discount off retail. Ordering is done on-line with next day delivery. A purchase order can be created for supplies or your PCard can be used.
Valencia’s bookstore carries a variety of supplies and can also special order many items, including books. Usually they will match any competitor’s price and sometimes are even less expensive. With locations on West, East, Osceola and Winter Park, the bookstore is great for those last minute items. Your PCard is accepted at any bookstore location or you can complete the Bookstore Interdepartmental Requisition found on Valencia’s Forms Generator.
The college does not endorse trips to retail store chains. Not only are you paying retail, but you will be charged tax, which will not be reimbursed by the college. Traveling during working hours is also a liability to the college and with the price of gas, how much are you really saving?
Both the bookstore and Office Depot use woman owned and minority owned manufacturers and report their spending to the college on a quarterly basis which is included in the quarterly state reports and Board of Trustees reports.
Your purchasing professionals are working for you to ensure that we maintain the standards you want at the price we want.
V Numbers and Vendors - When creating a requisition to a person such as a consultant, stipend, contractor, etc., it is important to choose the correct V number in Banner. A good practice is to look up the supplier in FOAIDEN and verify their address before creating the requisition. If the address is a BI or BU, then it was created by Purchasing to be used as a purchasing site or payment site. Other sites such as MA, CA or HR are used for other purposes, not related to the purchasing function.
Updated vendor list as of September 17 - An updated Banner vendor list can be found on the Finance Atlas Web page. You can download the Excel file and replace the one in your training manual. Remember, this is a helpful tool to use when locating your vendor, their VID number and DBA (Doing Business As) indicator. Should you need help in finding a vendor, please call us at extension 5532.
We look forward to seeing you on Learning Day, Tuesday, October 23 on East Campus. Details will be in next week’s issue of the Bulletin.

Dr. Tami Rogers has completed and passed the exam to become a Certified Nurse Educator. This designates her dedication and expertise in nursing education. She is one of 12 nurses in the state of Florida with a designation as a certified nurse educator.
Second year dental hygiene students Amy Teate, Norka Sorrough, Betsy Roche, and Liznell Lozada won first place in the table clinic competition at the Florida Dental Hygiene Association's annual symposium held Sept. 27-30 at the Hyatt. Not only did the judges rank them number one, but the group was selected by the members as the best table clinic in the competition. The students received a monetary award and gift bags of instruments and oral hygiene products. During the student meeting, Valencia students also took first and third places in a "Who Wants to be a Millionaire" challenge of their knowledge. We are proud of our students and the quality of education Valencia provides them as they pursue their goals to become licensed healthcare professionals. Pam Sandy, dental hygiene program chair, supervised twenty-five students attending the meeting, participated in the student advisor activities and was honored to install the association line officers for the 2007-2008 year at the House of Delegates.
