Planning Council Highlights 2006-2007

Valencia’s Planning Council focuses on the strategic priorities of the college. The Council coordinates activities related to developing, updating and monitoring the College’s Strategic Plan. The Council strives to integrate that process into its work with multi-year budget and staffing, as well as the institutional effectiveness needs of the college.  The goal is to foster a planning process that functions effectively as both a guide and an assessment framework for internal and external evaluations. The Council serves as the steering committee for institutional accreditation and oversees the college’s Diversity Plan.

The work of the Planning Council this year was focused primarily on the design and guidance of the strategic planning process for the new Strategic Plan.  A Planning Committee and five task forces were convened to direct the development of the content of the strategic plan under the guidance of President Sandy Shugart.

Strategic Plan Development

  • During the fall term, the Data and Situational/Needs Analysis Task Force gathered data about the College and community.
  • The Vision, Values, and Mission Task Force led discussion on changes to Valencia’s existing Vision, Values, and Mission statements.
  • College-wide discussions and input were conducted on Learning Day, October 2006, and Big Meeting One, March 2007.
  • The Communications Task Force focused on sharing information on the process and solicited input on products as they were developed.
  • The Evaluation Task Force examined and assessed the products and processes associated with the task forces.
  • The Strategies, Goals, and Objectives Task Force began development of specific goals of the developing plan in Spring Term, 2007.

Other Council Activity

  • Council members reviewed situational analyses from several colleges and universities. The aim was to gain a greater understanding of how analyses have been conducted at other colleges and how the written reports have been structured. The members broke into three groups to conduct a SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats) analysis.
  • Council members engaged in a SWOT analysis which was based on a review of a summary of data analyses prepared by the Data and Situational/Needs Analysis Task Force.
  • The Council received quarterly reports by Keith Houck, vice president for Administrative Services on revenues, expenditures, and development of the college’s Operational Budget (Fund 1).
  • The Council recommended the four Strategic Budget Initiative proposals forwarded by the SBI Review Group to the President for funding.  The proposals were:

1) 07-02 East Campus EAP Support Center

2) 07-03 International Study and Exchange (ISE) Center

3) 07-05 Online Tutoring and Writing Center

4) 07-07 Tutor Training
