The Collegewide Staff Council is again coordinating Valencia’s 3rd Annual Push for Pencils Supply Drive during the month of September. Join the Staff Council on your campus for the Push for Pencils Supply Drive kick off campaign this Wednesday, September 5 at the pdf Coffee Break. Bring your basic school supplies or monetary donations to the coffee break on any campus then join us for coffee and light refreshments.

  • East and CJI, Bldg. 3 Atrium, 10 a.m.
  • West, SSB walkway, 10 a.m.
  • Winter Park, Student Lounge, 8:30 a.m.
  • DTC, contact Cathy Campbell, ext. 3321
  • Osceola, contact Donna Sovern, ext. 4107

For those of you not familiar with Push for Pencils, it is a school supply drive to collect basic supplies for A Gift for Teaching’s free store for teachers.  Almost half the students in Central Florida can’t afford lunch let alone school supplies.  In most cases, dedicated teachers spend between $500 and $1,000 of their own money each year to purchase supplies for their students and classrooms.

Local businesses, community partners, and individuals help meet this need by providing surplus merchandise, basic school supplies, and funds to assist over 7,000 teachers and 100,000 students in high need schools in the tri-county area.  For every $1 donated, A Gift for Teaching can purchase $10 worth of supplies to assist classroom teachers.  Free store product donations include basic supplies such as pencils, crayons, glue, backpacks and books.  Outdated letterhead, file folders, maps and other office supplies are also great tools for the classroom.

If you would like to be an active member of the A Gift for Teaching Supply Drive committee, please contact Priscilla Gray, pgray@ valenciacc.edu or call ext. 6816.

College Learning Council Accomplishments for the 2006-2007 College Year

Valencia’s Learning Council focuses on the core learning processes at the college. Comprised of broad representation from administrative, faculty and student services constituencies, the Council examines issues relating to enrollment, curriculum, assessment and learning technology, and support systems. Committees that report to the Learning Council are involved with credentialing, the Honors program, professional development and support for the learning mission of the college. Agendas and minutes are available through Valencia’s web site at http://www. valencia ccedu/learningcouncil

Substantive issues guided by Learning Council leadership during the 2006-2007 fiscal year include:

Achieving the Dream - The Learning Council, as the core team of the Achieving the Dream project, conducts regular updates on the progress and the processes associated with the major components of the work, including Supplemental Learning (SL), Learning in Community (LinC), and Student Success (SLS). The updates this year included visits by AtD coach Rick Voorhees and consultant Dr. Hunter Boylan, who reviewed and offered recommendations. As the AtD project itself, its data-supported evidence, and the recommendations associated with it impact the strategic direction of college as a whole, the Learning Council initiated development of a task force for systematic data review and assessment of developmental education college-wide.

Learning in Community (LinC) courses - Starting with the Fall 2007 term, faculty teaching fully integrated LinC courses will receive compensation for the sum of the credit hours of the two LinC courses. The criteria for the degree of curricular integration and team teaching will be reviewed and defined.

Start Right Experience - Major discussions also focused on the long-term integration of AtD work through the development of a Start Right Experience (SRE) for students. Such a first-year experience, one that helps lead students toward future success, would involve both programmatic and systematic strategies. Although the focus for the SRE thus far has been on the registration process, there is much more to it, including the first classes, the transition from one class to sequential classes, etc. The Start Right Experience needs to be one that is truly global in nature, encompassing every area of the student's learning experience. The Learning Council stressed that its development should also be global in nature, involving college-wide discussions with staff and faculty over the coming year.

Common Course Outlines - As a result of focused effort on Learning Day, 2006, and the continued work of faculty, over 400 course outlines were revised during the year.

Curriculum Committee - The Learning Council supported a new charge and a revised membership structure for the Curriculum Committee, increasing representation by faculty.
