News from Procurement
The National Association of Educational Buyers (NAEB) reports a new scam being aimed at colleges. A company called MicroTech Solutions is calling area businesses, leaving a 1-8-6-6 number, and asking for the serial numbers and models of printers. If the company provides that information, MicroTech sends them printer equipment and an invoice. If you receive a call, do not share any information and contact Procurement.
Procurement has received reports from various departments indicating that suppliers using dubious business tactics are once again targeting Valencia. Departments may receive calls about:
- Renewal of orders that have never been placed by the department
- Invoices for goods never shipped
- Unbelievable discounts or special “deals”
To protect your department:
- Never give your Pcard number over the phone or in an email unless you’ve initiated the call/email.
- Do not give any information about your office equipment to unfamiliar suppliers.
- If someone calls you about the “renewal of a previous order,” ask them for the original purchase order number. If they produce a purchase order number, investigate the validity of the number.
- Do not authorize any shipment of supplies from a caller soliciting business over the phone.
Contact Procurement for assistance if you receive an invoice in the mail for an order you did not place or you receive a shipment of supplies which were never ordered.
Procurement Card FAQ:
Q: Who is eligible to receive a PCard?
A: All Valencia employees, excluding temporary and Grant funded, who routinely purchase for the college can be designated by their Budget Manager to apply for a Procurement Card. Each Procurement Card is uniquely assigned to an employee or authorized individual using Valencia funds and is tied to a specific funding source. Applications must have the Budget Managers approval (signature) on all forms.
Independent Contractor or Not? The IRS is responsible for determining whether an individual who provides services to a business is an independent contractor or an employee. Although many independent contractor relationships begin at the request of the service provider, this is no guarantee the IRS will not challenge the classification.
An excellent article published in the Journal of Accountancy goes into further detail regarding the subject of Consultant vs. Employee. A copy of this article can be found on the Procurement Web site: http://valenciacc.edu/procurement/facultystaff_FAQs.asp
