District Board of Trustees Meeting Summary

Reports

East Campus Update - Dr. Ruth Prather, provost of the East and Winter Park campuses, announced at the Board of Trustees April meeting that Valencia's Brain Bowl Team, of which her son Mark is a member, won the national championship against teams from Dartmouth and other universities. Dr. Prather credited professors Chris Borglum, Lois McNamara and Boris Nguyen for the students' amazing win. Dr. Prather went on to introduce Mark Logas, East Campus political science professor, who spoke about the increasingly popular civic leadership internship.

East Campus Student Government Association Report - Brianna Sheehan, East Campus SGA president, reviewed the highlights of the club's activities this year. Events included launching a coffee house to showcase socially conscious documentaries, participating in Relay for Life at Winter Park High School, and attending FCCSGA where students rallied on the steps of Florida's capitol.

Strategic Planning Update - Susan Kelley, vice president for Institutional Advancement and co-chair of the College Planning Council, presented an update on the development of a strategic plan for 2008-2013. She said that the council was in the process of identifying strategic issues, setting goals and recommending strategies for the plan, scheduled for completion this fall.

Construction Report - Keith Houck, vice president, Administrative Services, said that plans were coming along well for the design phase of Mod 10 (Signature Building) on West Campus. Module 8, he said, was on hold until the state budget was confirmed at the end of April. Also with regard to West Campus, the college is in the process of obtaining appraisals for two parcels of land that front Kirkman Road outside of the campus perimeter road, with the hopes of selling or leasing the land to provide additional funding for facilities. More information will be made available to the board at its next meeting.

Faculty Council Report - Tom Byrnes, Faculty Council president, reported on the council's ongoing efforts to improve the tenure process, establish online evaluation of faculty, and implement the first year of a professional development program for faculty. Mr. Byrnes also announced that Professor Michael Shugg, Entertainment Design & Technology, East Campus, was named the president-elect for the council, following Professor Rose Watson's tenure.

Valencia Foundation Report - Valencia Trustee Raymer Maguire reported that the Valencia Foundation would soon begin the public phase of a $20 million capital campaign, which is now in the third year of its quiet phase. Mr. Maguire also said that foundation board members were looking at developing a strategic plan for 2008-2013 in keeping with the college's strategic planning process.

President's Report - Valencia President Sanford Shugart called on Bill Mullowney, college counsel, to discuss the current legislative report and in particular, the differences between the Florida house and senate budgets and proposed cuts to PECO funding. Dr. Shugart also discussed the upcoming commencement ceremony in May, the recent Learning Conversations conference which was well attended, and an award ceremony held in Tampa to honor the All-USA Academic First Team where Osceola student Barry Bohnsack was one of 20 students nationwide to win the prestigious award.

New Business

West Campus Emergency Parking Lots Lighting - Dr. Shugart reported that the college had beefed up its security committee over the last academic year. In order to improve security on West Campus, the committee recommended and the president approved an $800,000 bid to upgrade the campus' lighting. The board approved moving forward with the lighting installation.

Consent Agenda - Approved under a consent agenda were the following new business items: Valencia Foundation approval of state matching requests; project priority list; policy amendments regarding the award of tenure, the evaluation of tenured and tenure-track faculty, and academic standards of satisfactory progress; additions, deletions or modifications of courses and programs; Valencia Enterprises courses and fees; Human Resources agenda; submission of grant proposals and property deletion.
