details will be forthcoming.
5K Draws Crowd
About 240 people registered for Valencia 's second annual "Run,
Walk & Roll" 5K race on Feb. 25, with many more competing
than last year. Helping to make the event a success was an estimated
80 volunteers including representatives from Collegewide Career
Staff Council who oversaw the kids "fun run" and supporting
activities; Professional Staff Leadership Team, who oversaw the
distribution of the refreshments; FACC who managed the water station;
Debi Jakubcin, manager, East Campus Fitness Center Facility, who
worked to provide a number of wellness activities for our runners;
and the Student Development Office on West Campus, who was invaluable
in the planning and set-up for this event.
Community support came from the Orlando Fire Department, Station
#12, who provided first-responder services. Of special note was
the radio coverage we received for this event. Teresa Gallagher
from the Alumni board played a pivotal role in securing
0-Rock 105 to do a live broadcast from the event. Mary Collier,
a member of Valencia 's Foundation Board of Directors, supported
the event with in-kind donations and had a staff member present.
UCF Student Athletic Trainers Organization provided warm up activities
for the adult and kids event.
The purpose of the 5K is to reach out to alumni, support the College's
Wellness program, increase community support, and raise money for
student scholarships. We will have more on the latter outcome in
the days to follow.
Planning committee members were Victor Collazo, coordinator, Student
Development, Michael Bosley, assistant provost, West Campus, Vivian
Martin, staff assistant, West Campus Provost Office, Keith Mizelle,
security supervisor, West Campus, Tom Lopez, director of Safety
and Security, and Christian Campagnuolo, assistant vice president
of Marketing & Media Relations.

Do You Know of a Student Who is Having Problems in
Math, English, or US Government?
Encourage them to be more successful in these challenging subjects
by signing up for classes with Supplemental Learning Leaders, also
known as SL Leaders. What is an SL Leader? The SL leader is a student
just like them. The SL leader has taken the course before and received
a good grade. The SL leader will attend every class and go through
the same experiences they will. The SL leader will be available
to help them with the class throughout the semester. The SL leader
is not just a tutor. The SL leader has an advantage that a tutor
does not. The SL leader knows what is going on in the course and
how the instructor teaches the material. The SL leader will not
just help them with the material, but also help them be a better
student. The SL leader will help with study skills, test preparation,
and other skills to be a successful student.
For more information on SL classes visit the Atlas Access Lab for
a list of SL leader courses at http://valenciacc.edu/studentservices/AtlasAccessLabs.asp

Achieving the Dream (AtD), Supplemental Learning
(SL) Update:
The Supplemental Learning Leadership Team is looking
for excellent students to be trained as Supplemental Learning Leaders.
Many of our best SL Leaders have been recommended to us from instructors
and staff, such as yourself. For the summer semester, we are offering
SL in MAT0012C, MAT0024C, MAT1033C, MAC1105, ENC1101, and POS2041.
We will need SL Leaders for each class that is offering an SL component.
SL Leaders participate in class, and they offer weekly "SL
sessions" for students enrolled in SL courses.
Do you know of a great student who would make a great SL Leader?

Thank You
"Perhaps you sent a lovely card, or sat quietly in a chair.
Perhaps you sent beautiful flowers, if so, we saw them there. Perhaps
you sent or spoke kind words as any friend could say. Perhaps you
were not there at all, just thought of us that day. Whatever you
did to console the heart, we thank you so much, whatever the part.
