Energy Wise From Valencia
's Energy Team
Siemens' Building Technologies, the college's energy consultant,
is continuing the audit process. While this initiative is in progress
a number of recommendations are being formulated to support the
final report that will be submitted to the college within a few
months. In the meantime, the college has been performing some minor
repairs that also contribute to energy savings. Effective February
2007 the college re-established a recycling program that is being
implemented in stages and starting on the East Campus for a six
months period. Once the process becomes fully functional the other
campuses will be included.
Success Stories : Valencia was successful in securing two
rebates totaling $11,000 from Progress Energy for the installation
of new energy efficient chillers on the East Campus. Other savings
on the East Campus can be attributed to the replacement of secondary
feeders to the newly installed power transformer and replacement
of the current transformer for buildings 1A and 1B. Savings on West
Campus are from the replacement of two circulating pumps in the
central plant, replacement of a chiller compressor, and upgrade
of controls. The Osceola Campus also benefited from energy savings
by adding to the Energy Management System (EMS) the controls of
lights in the common areas.
Energy Myth : Heating up a building in the morning takes
more energy than keeping it warm all night.
Energy Fact : Buildings have a large amount of heat loss
relative to their thermal mass. It usually takes less energy to
warm up a building daily rather than keep it warm all night.
Achieving the Dream (AtD), Supplemental
Learning (SL) Update:
The Supplemental Learning Leadership Team is looking for excellent
students to be trained as Supplemental Learning Leaders. Many of
our best SL leaders have been recommended to us from instructors
and staff such as yourself. For the summer semester, we are offering
SL in MAT0012C, MAT0024C, MAT1033C, MAC1105, ENC1101, and POS2041.
We will need SL leaders for each class that is offering an SL component.
SL leaders participate in class, and they offer weekly "SL
sessions" for students enrolled in SL courses.
Do you know of a great student who would make a great SL leader?
