Academic Assembly for all full-time faculty and professional staff
will be held Wednesday, August 22 on East Campus. Please
mark your calendars for this important college event. Further
details will be forthcoming.
Strategic Planning Update
Tell us what you think! The Vision, Values, and Mission Task Force
has just released proposed revised statements of the College's vision,
values, and mission, with the proposed revisions responding to over
1,000 suggestions received on Learning Day, October 31, 2006. We
would value your thoughts on how well we captured the ideas expressed
on that day, and whether you feel the statements express our values,
our mission, and our vision appropriately.
David Rogers, the Task Force's convener, is available to meet with
individuals and groups on each campus to discuss the proposed revisions
and to listen to your suggestions. Also, you may review and comment
on the suggestions via email to David at drogers@valenciacc.edu
. Please take a few minutes to review the revised statements
published in the January 22 issue of the Bulletin and let the Task
Force know what you think. Valencia 's plans for the future will
be built on fulfilling these important statements.
Credit for the work of the Vision, Values, and Mission Task Force
goes to its members: Johnny Aplin, Shauna Anstey, Fiona Baxter,
Danielle Boileau, Mike Bosley, Julie Corderman, Carmen Diaz, Kurt
Ewen, Barbara Frazier, Tim Grogan, Debi Jakubcin, Carol Johnson,
Lesena Jones, Scott Launier, Brent Nakagama, Linda Neal, Ann Puyana,
David Rogers, Dennis Weeks, and Felicia Williams.
"Painting a Picture" of Valencia and our community - In early February,
you will have the opportunity to review and comment on a second
important planning document. The Data and Situational/Needs Analysis
Task Force will release a draft situational/needs analysis that
summarizes what the Task Force members learned in reviewing over
60 sets of data about the College and our community. It contains
information that may surprise you!
The narrative "paints a picture" of the College and the community
that we serve, and collegewide consideration and comment will be
invited before the document is finalized in March, taking into account
all comments received. Your ideas will be sought about anything
important that may have been missed, and the extent to which you
think the description accurately describes the community and the
College. The document will provide a basis for discussion at the
Big Meeting on March 2.
A major task in strategic planning is to identify strategic issues
that will impact the college, and the strategic goals that we will
set for ourselves. Those goals, in turn, drive future budget decisions.
The situational/needs analysis document provides a foundation for
making those decisions.
The members of the Task Force charged with developing this document
are Fiona Baxter, Jennifer Britton, Christian Campagnuolo, Kurt
Ewen, Fitzroy Farquharson, Rhonda Glover, Liz Gombash, Carin Gordon,
Thomas Greene, Susan Kelley, Joe Lynn Look, Julie Phelps, Ruth Prather,
Andrew Ray, Pedro Rivera, Cheryl Robinson, Valerie Russell, Allison
Sloan, Joan Tiller, and Elizabeth Washington.
The Big Meeting: March 2 - Over the past decade, as Valencia sought
out ways to effectively support collaborative decision-making, a
meeting that has come to be called a "Big Meeting" emerged as an
important tool. A Big Meeting is just what its name says: a meeting
of a large group of people. The Big Meeting is aimed at making major
decisions about our future in an open and collaborative way, with
representation from all employee groups.
Big Meeting participants will consider strategic issues that impact
the college, project strategic goals for the 2008-13 time period,
and list strategies that might be used to realize those goals. Around
175 people will receive invitations to the meeting, including members
of the College Planning Council, the Council's planning task forces,
the College Planning Committee. Representatives from career service,
faculty, and professional groups will be included. A report from
the Big Meeting will be released in late spring, and it will set
the stage for the College's four governing councils to begin to
flesh out plans for the strategic goals that are developed.
A new web site for the College Planning Council has been created
and it will feature information about the strategic planning process,
including agendas and minutes of all meetings, documents in draft
form with opportunities to comment, final documents, and a schedule
of planning events. We invite you to visit the page at http://valenciacc.edu/strategicplan/
Watch for someone you know on posters around campus! Soon, you
will see posters going up around the campuses, featuring photos
of folks on each campus who are available to answer questions and
talk with you about the strategic planning process. The College
Planning Council truly values what you have to say about the College's
future, and we will carefully consider each and every idea submitted
to us. The campus representatives pictured on the new posters serve
on the Communications Task Force, and they are ready to help you
share your thoughts with the Council and to get involved. They are
your personal connection to the strategic planning process.
Express your opinion on the future of Central Florida . When we
consider the future of Valencia , it is very clear that our future
is tied to that of our community. Task Force member Joe Lynn Look
shares with us that the Orlando Regional Chamber of Commerce has
been supporting an organization called myregion.org, which is working
to shape the future of the seven-county Central Florida region.
Myregion has modeled a current trend projection for things such
as water and air quality, traffic density/time on the road commuting,
and the amount of conserved land we have available to enjoy, reaching
out to the year 2050. It has also modeled three different
courses of action, the details of which can be seen at .
Starting Friday, January 26th and running through Wednesday, February
14th, people who make their homes in Central Florida will have the
opportunity to weigh in on the type of community we want to see
in the future. We can voice our most important priorities,
and the result of this widespread public opinion will be made available
to public officials and community leaders throughout the region.
A survey has been opened on the Myregion.org website during that
time for all to participate. We encourage you to visit that
site and voice your opinions.

News from Procurement
When ordering toner cartridges through Procurement's Web site be
sure to include both the printer model number and the cartridge
order number on the request form. This reduces any errors in ordering.
Also please note that if you are ordering Dell printer cartridges,
we need an additional 3-5 business days for delivery from Dell.
Dell toner printer cartridges are proprietary to Dell, are more
costly, and have a slower delivery time. Our local toner cartridge
companies can not supply us with Dell toners.
Procurement encourages departments to submit quotes with their
requisitions. This gives you a good idea of the cost of the goods
or services and it gives Procurement a bench mark from which to
work to finalize the purchase. This may or may not end up being
the "official" quote. If the submitted quote does not
end up being the "official quote, (the one that we use) then
procurement will obtain the necessary quotes. Procurement will help
obtain any quotes that are needed, provided we have a good description
of what is required.
One of the college's goals is to support local, woman and minority
owned companies. Procurement personnel attended the 2007 Florida
Minority Supplier Development Council (FMSDC) Annual Meeting held
at the International Plaza Resort and Spa here in Orlando . Over
100 local minority suppliers attended the annual meeting. The procurement
staff was on hand to discuss "How to do business with Valencia Community
College " and answered any questions they had on becoming a new
vendor. The college encourages departments to maximum utilization
of diverse supplier communities like Native American, Woman, African
American, Hispanic American, and Asian American owned businesses.
Campus Food Services Update - The College is excited about the
new food services provider, Cabin Creek Foods, Inc. They are the
same company that has been providing the Lil Bean Coffee kiosks
on our campuses for several years now.
If you recall, prior to going through the Request for Proposal
(RFP) process last year, we asked faculty, staff and students to
complete an on-line survey. The purpose of the survey was to attempt
to measure the satisfaction of the previous foodservice provider
and to determine what to emphasize in the new contract.
We are anxious to find out what you think of our new food service
provider. Therefore, Procurement is currently developing a new survey
to gather data on Cabin Creek Foods which will be available to faculty,
staff, and students within the next few weeks. In the meantime,
please feel free to forward any suggestions, recommendations or
areas for improvement to valenciaprocurement@valenciacc.edu
