The Howe Collazo Starfish Swam Scholarship Story
Have you ever asked yourself, “What can I do to help?”
“What difference could I, one person, make?”
Valencia alum Jennifer Howe Rogan knows. Jennifer was a single parent
attending Valencia when she became involved in many campus activities,
as well as becoming a volunteer. That’s when she met Victor
Collazo, West Campus Student Development Coordinator, and became
part of the Welcome Team. Jennifer credits Victor for helping her
grow personally and professionally, encouraging her to be the best
she could be, even during trials and tribulations that life threw
her way. Victor gave her an invaluable gift – the knowledge
of one thing that no one could ever take away from her - her education.
Jennifer graduated from Valencia in 1999 and now owns and operates
her own children’s clothing business, So Sweet Boutique.
Jennifer established the Howe-Collazo Starfish Swam Scholarship
through the Valencia Alumni Association in the spring of 2005 as
a way to honor Victor and the mentor-student relationship and the
endless possibilities of how one person can make a difference. Once
it reaches $10,000 and becomes endowed, the scholarship will be
awarded by the Alumni Association to a student that believes in
giving back to the community whether it be through volunteering,
student service or generating social change. Jennifer explains,
“I dedicate the story of the Starfish to Victor Collazo and
thank him for making a difference to the many children, men and
women and most importantly …making a profound difference to
me.”
The Starfish story is about a boy who kept throwing starfish he
found stranded on the beach back into the sea. A wise old man who
frequently walked the beach, approached the young boy and inquired
about what he was trying to do. The young boy explained that since
the sun was up and the tide was going out he was helping the starfish
get back into the ocean; if he didn’t, they would die. The
wise old man commented, “But do you not realize that there
are miles and miles of beach and there are starfish all along every
mile? You can’t possibly make a difference.” The young
boy, who continued this task, pick up one more and replied, “To
this one, it makes a difference!”
YOU can help make a difference by purchasing the 2006-2007 Entertainment
Books from any of the representatives listed below. Books are only
$25 with over $10,000 worth of savings. Proceeds will go towards
supporting this scholarship. True, we may not be able to help every
student, but what a difference we can make to those we can!

New Address or Phone Number?
If you recently moved or have a new address or phone number, you'll
need to be sure Human Resources knows about the change. A Change
of Address form is available on the college website or you can request
one by calling extension 8033. HR will also accept an address/phone
number change from an employee via e-mail. Call HR to find out who
to send the e-mail to and what other information might be needed.
Attention Supervisors! If you supervise work study students or part-time
hourly employees, please remind them to notify Human Resources when
they move or get a new phone number. This will prevent pay checks,

by the post office.
