Annual Hiring Freeze
The annual hiring freeze for new full-time employees will soon be
in effect. To hire an employee before the freeze becomes effective,
the employee must begin work on or before November 13, 2006. After
that date, recruitment activities may be conducted through Human
Resources department and offers of employment may be extended, however
the employee may not begin work until January 8, 2007.
News from Internship and Placement
On September 15 Valencia’s Internship and Placement department
held a breakfast awards ceremony to recognize its internship business
partners for their continued partnership offering invaluable work-based
learning experiences for students.
Orlando Regional Healthcare was honored for having partnered with
Valencia over the past ten years to provide 308 internships in various
heath related careers, as well as psychology and computer information
technology.
SeaWorld Orlando was honored for its Whale Watch and other exciting
programs that have given 299 students the opportunity to experience
careers in their chosen fields. Chuck Tompkins, Vice President of
Animal Training, SeaWorld Orlando said, "We have enjoyed an
outstanding relationship with Valencia's Internship program. As
the world’s premiere marine adventure park, we are always
looking for top students with an interest in science and psychology
fields and this program has introduced us to hundreds of potential
career candidates who excel in passion and dedication."
Senator Mel Martinez was also honored for his support and participation
in Valencia’s Civic Leadership Internship Program.
Valencia's Internship & Placement Office celebrates ten years
of partnership and success in 2006. Since 1996, Valencia has helped
place 4,387 interns with 1,900 employers in the Central Florida
area.
News from Procurement
Food Services has been added to the Procurement Web page. We will
be updating it regularly to include catering services, menus, specials

Outgoing printed mail envelopes from the college may or may not
contain a line directing the postal service what to do to a piece
of mail if undeliverable. The following is a list of actions and
costs associated with such lines:
Address Correction Requested -
• Months 1-12: mail piece forwarded; separate notice of new
address provided, manual $0.75, electronic $0.21 each.
• Months 13-18: mail piece returned with new address attached.
No charge for returned mail.
• After 18 months or if undeliverable at any time, mail piece
returned with reason for non-delivery attached. No charge for returned
mail.
Return Service Requested
• No forwarding, only return. New Address notification provided.

Faculty, Staff and Students it’s Time to Bring
Your Children, Grandchildren, Brothers and Sisters to School!
A story time with children’s author Dianne Ochiltree will
be held in the Health Science Building on Valencia’s West
Campus on November 11 from 10-11:30 a.m. This event which is part
of the Raising Readers program will include stations for children
to draw pictures of the stories they’ve heard. Light refreshments
will be served. For additional information please contact the Communications

News from Collegewide Staff Council
Valencia donated an estimated $14,563 in school supplies for the
Push for Pencils supply drive held in September. The staff at A
Gift for Teaching was overwhelmed by the generosity of Valencia
- “Thank you very much to you, the supply drive committee,
and all the staff, faculty, and students at Valencia Community College
for this FABULOUS donation!! You all are changing the lives of so
many students in need! THANK YOU!! THANK YOU!!! THANK YOU!!!”
The Staff Council would like to give special recognition and thanks
to Priscilla Gray for her leadership and devotion
to this worthy cause. Under her direction the project ran smoothly
and was tremendously successful.
NISOD Nominations
Please consider nominating a worthy colleague for the National Institute
for Staff & Organizational Development (NISOD) Excellence in
Learning Leadership Award. The purpose of the NISOD awards program
at Valencia is to recognize members of the faculty, staff and administration
for outstanding accomplishments in improving student learning. Recipients
should have demonstrated meritorious learning leadership, as outlined
in the award guidelines.

Migrating Your Existing Course From WebCT 4.1 to WebCT 6
- This workshop will show you how to move your existing WebCT course
from version 4.1 to the latest version 6. You will be given information
on how to perform the procedure, learn some common pitfalls, hear
about some migration strategies, and see an example of how existing
content moves into the new environment. You will have the opportunity
to schedule an appointment with an LTAD staff member at the conclusion

Holocaust Study: A Visit to Auschwitz, Warsaw and Kracow - Learn

Formation is For Everyone - Join us for ongoing, relaxed lunch
conversations around Parker Palmer's essay, "13 Ways of Looking
at Community." Our first meeting will be to introduce Parker
Palmer and Formation; thereafter, alternating lunch on East and
West campuses throughout the year, each time talking with others
about one of the 13 ways. This is a time for faculty, staff and
administrators to practice ways of speaking and being heard that
allow a group to become a deeply respectful and caring community-in-learning

What WebCT Can Do For You Video Conference - This video conference
session will provide participants with an overview of how WebCT
can enhance their curricula. Topics covered will include designing
a course, communicating with students, creating assignments, and
using the gradebook. Participants will also discuss how an instructor
can get a course designated as either WebCT enhanced, hybrid or
fully online. The video conference will be November 9, 1:15-2:15

The Learning Center at Osceola Campus and the West Campus Tutoring

History professor Charles Killinger was inducted
into the Rhodes College Athletic Hall of Fame at Rhodes’ homecoming
on October 21 in Memphis, Tennessee along with other members of
Rhodes’ 1961 NCAA championship baseball team.
