Educators-in-Industry Institute

The Tech Prep Educators-in-Industry Institute is a great way to explore current industry trends by visiting top employers in the Central Florida area. It also provides great networking opportunities to form long-lasting professional associations with teachers, administrators and counselors from Orange and Osceola District schools and Valencia Community College. Over 800 educators have participated in the institute since Tech Prep began this program in 1992.

The institutes are four days in length. The first 3 ½ days are spent visiting seven businesses in key industry areas. The final afternoon is a workshop to discuss what was learned and how we can incorporate it in our teaching or interactions with students. Two institutes will be held in June:

Institute 1: June 5, 6, 7, 8

Institute 2: June 12, 13, 14, 15

Limited space is available. Email bandrews@valenciacc.edu for more information or to sign-up.

Valencia’s Achieving the Dream Initiative Holds First Community Conversation on West Campus

As a part of the Achieving the Dream (AtD) Initiative, Valencia is consulting the community regarding ways we can work together to support student success and close achievement gaps. We were selected by AACC and Lumina as one of five colleges to receive professional support in conducting community outreach from Public Agenda, a national organization that fosters dialog in communities.

The Public Agenda model centers on holding community conversations at which people from a broad cross section of the community come together to discuss and offer options to solve problems. Public Agenda provided training to moderators and recorders, who were drawn from our Achieving the Dream community co-sponsors, to assist us in launching our first Community Conversation, held Saturday, April 1, 2006, on West Campus.

The training provided moderators/recorders with key listening and recording skills necessary to create a productive dialogue among a broad cross-section of participants in support of our AtD work. Eleven moderators and nine recorders, nominated by our community co-sponsors, took part in the training.

Brain Bowl Takes 3rd Place in Nationals

The Valencia Brain Bowl team took 3rd place recently at the National Academic Quiz Tournaments Intercollegiate Tournament (NAQT ICT). Broward Community College took first place and Faulkner State in Alabama took second place.

As the NAQT ICT places community college teams in with four-year colleges, Valencia has had wins against Southern Virginia, Carleton College (Minnesota) and the University of Virginia.

The team consisted of Mark Prather, Sean Platzer, Scott McMillen, Jaclyn Constantine and Van Phan. If you know these students, congratulate them on the success that has followed their many hours of practice and travel this year. Thanks to all of you who helped tell players about the team and/or supported us in many other ways. A special thanks to Coaches Boris Nguyen and Lois McNamara and also Doug Chaffee, Marcey Camacho, Vivian Martin, Mike Bosley and Sonya Joseph for their budget and logistical assistance.

If you know students who are knowledgeable in literature, history, humanities, science or who want to be more knowledgeable in these areas, please have them contact Chris Borglum at cborglum@valenciacc.edu or extension 6869.

News from Procurement

The college is currently pursuing the use of multi-functional machines that can copy/fax/print/scan/scan to e-mail. These multi-functional machines will be networked and shared by multiple departments, reducing the need for desk top printers, fax machines, and scanners. Stand-alone departmental fax machines and printers are not covered under any service agreement and toner cartridges are the responsibility of the department to be paid for by the department. Under the contract for the multi-functional machines, repair, service and all toner is included in our monthly service agreement. The procurement office is evaluating collegewide copier use. Two locations are currently testing a pilot program that began in January 2006. Further data and information will be forthcoming as the process develops.

Procurement Card Use and Sales Tax - Procurement card holders are reminded that the college is State-of-Florida sales tax exempt. Our tax exempt number is embossed on the front of the card for easy reference. It is recommended that cardholders inform vendors of the college’s status before finalizing any sale to avoid instances of improperly charged tax.

Supplier Diversity - Because one of our college goals is to support local, woman and minority owned companies, we encourage our departments to maximize utilization of our diverse supplier communities like Native American, Women-owned, African American, Hispanic American, and Asian American vendors. If you need help identifying any one of these suppliers, please call us at ext. 5532.

The procurement office seeks active participation through advertisements, Invitations to Bid and Requests for Proposals for procurement activities. We have also established negotiated contracts with several local, minority-owned businesses for items such as toner cartridges, name tags, stamps, paper and custodial supplies.

Office of Institutional Research and Learning Assessment

The Office of Institutional Research and Learning Assessment (IRLA) has gone to an online data request process. IRLA regularly publishes a variety of data tables and reports on the IRLA web page. Specialized requests, that use to be handled via phone and email, are now handled through an online procedure to standardize all requests.

The form may be accessed through IRLA's web site at http://valenciacc.edu/ir/ by selecting the link in the left navigation bar entitled “Info/Data Request.” The form is designed to guide requestors with organizing and describing the specific components of their data requirements. Once the requestor completes the form, it is submitted electronically to IRLA. There is also an option to attach prior reports, external agency surveys, or other types of electronically-stored documents. Once submitted, requestors will be able to print a copy of the request form for their documentation.

Not only will this process help requestors to define their data criteria more specifically, it will also enable IRLA staff to meet data requests with improved precision and efficiency. Other benefits from the standardized process include the compilation of an historical archive of the frequency and types of data requested, the prevention of duplicated data efforts among IRLA staff members, and an improved planning and prioritization process for setting project due dates and IRLA work assignments.

Should you have questions about any features of the form or how to complete it, please contact Michal Ewing at ext. 1612 or email at mewing@valenciacc.edu.

Hello and Goodbye

A warm Valencia welcome is extended to Marisa Guilfoyle, security manager, Security-East, mc 3-14, ext. 2365; Donna Rivera, program advisor, Upward Bound, mc 4-40, ext. 1810 and Joyce Wilson, senior library technician, Acquisitions and Technical Services-West, mc 4-4, ext. 1581.

Payroll Reminders

Is your W-4 up to date? You may need to file an amended W-4 form, Employee’s Withholding Allowance Certificate, if your filing status, exemption allowances or exempt status has changed since the last W-4 you filed. If you need to make a change, the W-4 form can be picked up in the finance offices on each campus or contact the payroll department at ext. 8160.

Do you have direct deposit? Did you know that employees who use direct deposit can:
• access their entire paycheck on payday
• can save up to 26 hours per year not standing in check cashing line
• are paid when on vacation or out of the office
• never worry about a lost paycheck

Contact Payroll Services at ext. 8160 to sign up.

New Address or Phone Number?

If you recently moved or have a new address or phone number, you'll need to be sure Human Resources knows about the change. A change-of-address form is available on the college website or you can request one by calling extension 8033. HR will also accept an address/phone number change from an employee via e-mail. Call HR to find out who to send the e-mail to and what other information might be needed.

Supervisors, if you supervise work study students or part-time hourly employees, please remind them to notify Human Resources when they move or get a new phone number. This will prevent pay checks, direct deposit stubs, W-2 forms, etc. from being returned, undeliverable, by the post office.
