Academic Affairs Announces Improvements for International Inquiries

There are now two centralized collegewide phone numbers for referring calls from prospective international students. Extension 2220, East Campus International Students office, is for all degree-seeking students. Extension 6775, Valencia Enterprises and Center for Global Languages, is for all non-credit offerings.
Please make a note of these numbers and refer any appropriate inquiries to these locations. This is one small strategy in a larger initiative to better serve potential students and to help reverse the post 9-11 international enrollment trends. You can help--thank you!

Endowed Chair Deadline Approaching

Applications are now being accepted for the recently revised Endowed Chairs for Learning Leadership program. The program honors Valencia teaching faculty and provides resources needed for the advancement of instruction and learning. This year the Valencia Foundation is offering 31 chairs, altogether totaling $92,600. The guidelines and application package with complete program details can be found on the foundation's website at http://www.valencia.org/ or by calling Becky Gallup, College & Community Relations, at ext. 3218. The deadline for submission of application packets is March 31 by 5 p.m.

News from Procurement

The Valencia procurement card, referred to as the P-card, is a Master Card credit card that is used for small dollar departmental purchases. It is a Valencia Community College credit card with a card holder's name embossed on the card. The card holder is not the liable party for the card, nor is their own personal credit affected by this ownership. The card holder's responsibility is to purchase items that comply with college policy and follow the procedures established by the Valencia P-card administrator, which is the Procurement department.

The P-card program has been in effect since March 2003 and has been successful in reducing the volume of requisitions, purchase orders, invoices and checks processed by Valencia staff. It is also an excellent tool for quick or Internet shopping.

All employees at the college are permitted to obtain a procurement card with proper approval by their budget manager. An application can be found at: http://valenciacc.edu/procurement/ProcurementCard.asp

Departments that do little purchasing but need to order something where only a credit card payment is allowed, please call the procurement department. We have a collegewide credit card number that we can use to place your order for you. All we request is detailed information and your departmental account and general ledger code to properly charge the amount.

It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to one of our buyers, Cali Campanella. Cali has accepted a position with Orange County Public School System in the Procurement office. We wish Cali the best of luck in this and all her future endeavors.

Leadership Valencia

FrontPage Introduction - This workshop is an introduction to FrontPage and the basics of the Web. Learn how FrontPage creates Web pages and how Web pages really work. This course will cover the fundamentals, text, hyperlinks, and images. Thursday, March 30, 1-5 p.m., East Campus, Room 4-204, registration code: TFP330.

How Full is Your Bucket? - How did you feel after your last interaction with another person? Did that person -- your spouse, best friend, coworker or even a stranger -- 'fill your bucket' by making you feel more positive? Or, did that person 'dip from your bucket', leaving you feeling more negative than before? How Full Is Your Bucket reveals how even the briefest interactions affect your relationships, productivity, health and longevity. Organized around a simple metaphor of a dipper and a bucket and grounded in 50 years of research, this workshop will show you how to greatly increase the positive moments in your work and your life -- while reducing the negative. Friday, March 31, 8:30-11:00 a.m., East Campus, Room 5-112, registration code: GHFYB.

Developing Others - Organizations need to get the most out of their people, and employees want the opportunity to do more, grow and develop. Developing others is critical to retaining key talent, driving higher levels of employee engagement, and ultimately impacting an organization's success. This course provides leaders, coaches, and mentors with a practical process and the skills necessary to develop talent. It focuses on the leader role before, during and after the development plan. Friday, March 31, 8:30 a.m. - 12 noon, Sand Lake Center, registration code: MDO.

Circles of Belonging - Ever wonder what makes a person tick? Individual experiences play a huge part in shaping the way in which we interact with others and view the world around us. This in-depth interactive workshop will examine how diversity of experience impacts our interpersonal communications and relationships. Through discovery and discussion, learn more about yourself and the people around you. Participants will leave with an increased understanding of and appreciation for our similarities and differences. Friday, March 31, 9 a.m.-4 p.m., Osceola Campus, Room 3-239, registration code: PCOB4

Valencia Brain Bowl Does it Again!!!!

Valencia took top honors at the Florida Community College Activities Association State Brain Bowl Championship held recently at Brevard Community College. This is Valencia's sixth state title in the last 13 years. The students on the winning team were Sean Platzer, Mark Prather, Van Phan, Scotty McMillen and Brianna Sheahan. Valencia also had a second team in the tournament that won three games and was comprised of Shaun Wright, Carrie Nieroda-Krauss, Brittany Dytrych, Anthony Nguyen and Tiffany Clemans. Much credit is due Boris Nguyen and Lois McNamara for helping the students hone their skills in math and humanities, respectively. The team will now try for its fourth national title at the University of Maryland in April. Thanks to all who played a part in helping these students get smarter and represent Valencia.

Congratulations to Martha Williams who has been chosen to participate in the National Institute for Leadership Development LEADERS program, an international program for administrators and faculty in higher education. This year-long program, designed to enhance the skills participants need to assume major decision making roles in their institutions, includes institutional practice in supervisory and human relations skills, planning and budgeting and organizational transformation as well as discussions with national experts on the issues confronting higher education during the next decade. During the program, Willliams will be mentored by Louise Pitts, assistant vice president, Academic Affairs to work on projects that will aid Valencia and foster individual professional growth.
