Important Information for all 10-Month Faculty

There are 26 pay periods in academic year 2008-2009. All 10-month faculty have the option of having their base salary disbursed in 22 payments over ten months, based on academic appointment, or in 26 payments over twelve months. Once the first payroll for the academic year is processed, this option may not be changed until the next academic year.

Human Resources is posting this notice in multiple issues of the Bulletin in lieu of a mailing to faculty home addresses. All 10-month faculty have the June/July window to revise their salary payment option for the coming academic year.  Faculty wishing to make a change will be required to complete a “Payment Option Form for 10-Month Faculty.” This form is available online through Atlas at Valencia Forms on the Employee page. To make a change, you must complete the form and submit it to Human Resources no later than July 31. Changes are then effective for the first payday in the new academic year.

Please contact Vicki Nelson at ext. 8031 if you have any questions.

Study Abroad News

The Study Abroad & Global Exchange (SAGE) office is partnering with the Community Colleges for International Development (CCID) Troika initiative to develop a study abroad program in China. The programming model is called “Troika” because a minimum of three CCID colleges collaborate on an international program. The primary objective of this model is to provide community college students with greater access to study abroad opportunities and the deep learning experiences it provides.

During spring break, Deymond Hoyte, Valencia professor of Computer Engineering Technology, in collaboration with professors from Tulsa Community College and Greenville Technical College, visited Shanghai and environs to familiarize themselves with various facilities and to work with Shanghai Finance University, in preparation for a joint business course offering in China. This 3-credit course will examine China’s business, economic, social, and cultural impact in the context of globalization.Professor Hoyte will serve as the lead faculty member when the professors take a group of students to China in the spring of 2009.

Wellness pdf

Please join us for our next Brown Bag Lunch presentation “Cholesterol: What You Need to Know” on Thursday, May 15. East Campus, 11a.m.-12 noon, Room 3-113; Winter Park Campus, 1-2 p.m., Room 224; Osceola Campus, 11a.m.-12 noon, Auditorium; West Campus, 1-2 p.m., Room 6-202. No registration is necessary, just show up, learn and enjoy.

We have some exciting Wellness activities scheduled for summer semester. All Wellness classes will begin the week of May 12th. One new class we’d like to highlight is called Operation VCC Fitness. This class will be offered on East Campus, Thursday mornings from 7:15-7:45 a.m. in the gym and on West Campus, Wednesday mornings from 7:15-7:45 a.m. in the dance studio.

Operation VCC Fitness is designed to encourage personal health improvement in a supportive and encouraging group setting. “Recruits” are encouraged to compete not only against themselves, but with others for the very best results and classes are only 30 minutes. Exercises will be primarily body-weight (no dumbbells/machines) and will include circuit drills ranging from running to jumping jacks to push-ups, squats and sit-ups. Stretching and other forms of exercise will be incorporated as well. Operation VCC Fitness is based on the nationally accredited “Operation Fitness” Bootcamp program offered by Elite Fitness Concepts in Orlando. It has been reviewed and approved by NESTA (National Exercise & Sports Trainers Association) and by ISSA (International Sports Science Association).

Don’t be worried that your fitness level might prevent you from participating. Nearly all exercises in this program can be modified to accommodate your fitness level or even work around many injuries. Just communicate your injuries or fitness concerns to the instructor and you will be given exercise variations that can keep you participating. This class is intended for all fitness levels so just come with an open mind and the intention to improve your health.

If you have any questions about Wellness activities, please contact Debi Jakubcin at ext 2281 or email djakubcin@valenciacc.edu.

News from Procurement

Need quotes? Check out Procurement’s Web site for the Quote Request Form. We are glad to obtain the quotes for you. Remember that three written quotes are required for purchases between $3,500 and $25,000.

Purchasing Card FAQ - Q: My PCard’s expiration date is approaching. Do I need to order a renewal? A: No. Your renewal PCard will automatically be sent to Procurement, who will then notify and forward it to you before the end of your current card’s expiration month.

Toner Cartridge Scams - Beware of solicitors who call and want to send you toner cartridges.  The college has contracts with all our copier vendors who provide us with copier toner at no charge.

Review of College Policy - According to Valencia Community College Policy 6Hx28:06-12, the following spending thresholds require:

  • $3,500-$24,999 Three (3) Written Quotes are needed and each quote must be only from one company.
  • $25,0000-$250,000 A formal Invitation to Bid (ITB) or Request for Proposals (RFP), depending on the circumstances, is solicited and advertised by the procurement department for comparative bids. Award is approved by the procurement director with concurrence from requesting department.
  • $250,000 + Procurements exceeding this amount require the District Board of Trustees approval.

Best business practice dictates written quotes for any goods/services under the $25,000 threshold.  Procurement encourages departments to submit quotes with their requisitions. This gives you (the user) a good idea of the cost of the good or service and it gives Procurement a bench mark from which to work to finalize the purchase. This may or may not end up being the "official" quote. If the submitted quote does not end up being the "official quote, (the one that we use) then procurement will obtain the necessary quotes. Procurement will help obtain any quotes that are needed provided we have a good description of what is required.
