CLEP - General procedure

CLEP tests offer a way for you to earn college credit for things you already know. On the back of this form is a list of tests offered via CLEP. If you are confident you know a lot about one of the subjects listed, you may want to consider taking a CLEP test.

You can earn between 3 and 6 credits with one CLEP test, depending on the subject you choose, and your score earned. Not a bad deal for $85. There is a $15 appointment fee to Valencia , which must be paid before you can schedule an appointment, and a $70 fee to CLEP, payable the day you take the test. You can use a credit card to pay both fees.

Of course there are some catches. You can only earn 45 credits via CLEP (wouldn't that be great!). If you take a test and do not achieve a passing score, you have to wait six months to retest. Taking the same test within 6 months will invalidate your scores, and you'll lose any money you paid for the appointment and the test. CLEP offers more test than the State of Florida Department of Education will accept for credit. Only those tests listed at Exams Offered will be given as they are the only tests for which you can receive credit at Valencia - or any other public institution in Florida . Finally, you cannot retake a CLEP exam that you have previously earned credit for (for example, if you have CLEP credit for MGF1107 you cannot get CLEP credit for MGF1106).

CLEP is given Monday through Friday on East, Osceola, and West Campuses by appointment only. Valencia is a limited test center. This means you must be currently enrolled in credit courses at Valencia , or be a past Valencia student to test. The tests are offered only on the computer. The good part about this is you'll know your scores immediately (except for the English Composition with Essay test), though it takes up to 5 weeks for the credit to appear on your transcript.

Step 1: Obtain a CLEP Appointment Request Form from Assessment or the Answer Center on any campus. You can select up to three exams per form.

Step 2: Fill out the CLEP Appointment Request Form and the CollegeBoard CLEP Registration Form.

Step 3: Circle the exam(s) you wish to take.

Step 4: Pay the $15 administration fee (per exam) in the Business Office. A separate administration fee is required for each test. All appointment fees are non-refundable , so be sure you want to test before you pay the fee. If you miss your appointment, or cancel your appointment the day of the test, you will need to pay the appointment fee again.

Step 5: Return the completed forms with the Business Office receipt to the Assessment Center to schedule an appointment to test.

Step 6: Study! The Official Study Guides for CLEP are available in the Library or you can download the study guides from www.collegeboard.org/CLEP.

Step 7: Take the test. When you come for your appointment, be sure to bring a government issued photo ID, such as your driver's license, and the $70 test fee. You can pay by credit card, check or money order (payable to CLEP). You cannot pay cash for the test.
