Appalachian State University in Boone, NC is home to the National Center for Developmental Education and its annual Kellogg Institute, the nation’s longest running and most prestigious advanced training program for developmental educators and learning skills specialists.
As announced in the Spring 2009 FDEA Newsletter, the association plans to provide a scholarship for one FDEA member to attend the four-week Kellogg Institute in 2010. Space for the FDEA recipient has been reserved for next year’s program, and the scholarship will pay for institute fees, room and board, and airfare from the recipient’s closest airport.
This is a “celebration of the 31’s.” The scholarship will be awarded this fall at our 31st annual FDEA conference. And the 2010 institute will be the Kellogg’s 31st anniversary!
The Kellogg Institute is designed as an advanced professional training program to assist practitioners in expanding their knowledge of the field and improving their own developmental or learning assistance program. The institute is not an introduction to the field; accordingly, scholarship applicants must have at least three years experience in developmental education.
The program consists of an intensive four-week summer residence session, followed by a semester-long supervised practicum to be carried out at the participant’s home campus. The 2009 Kellogg Handbook has general information about the residency program and the practicum project.
Any FDEA member with the interest and commitment to this learning opportunity is encouraged to apply for the FDEA scholarship.
